About the Item
At first glance, Gary Kaleda's digital paintings appear to be traditionally painted, but upon closer inspection the color gradations and textures are far too precise, even scientific, to be done by the physical hand.
Kaleda begins his paintings with digital models, which he uses as a reference to paint from, much in the same way a traditional painter would use a live model to study the human figure. Rather than brushes and oils, Kaleda's tools are Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter, which he then prints as a Duraflex silver halide print. He also incorporates QR codes into the compositions, which contain information about the painting and act as a digital signature.
"Crimson Me" depicts the figure of a nude woman. Her red hair and pale skin slightly blurred by what appears to be pixelation, and she stands before a flat, grey gradient. Traditional and contemporary imagery meet in this digitized study of the human form. The pixelation, while being a component of modern technology, also refers to the paint smudges of the romantic period. The perfect gradient of the grey background contrasts with the blurred borders of the figure, its digitally precise color variations reinforcing the digitizes nature of the painting.
