George Henry Story
The Class Clown

circa 1880

About the Item

A fun genre painting with students in a classroom being students by American artist George Henry Story (1835-1923). Story was born in New Haven, CT, and after studying a year in Europe, returned to study portrait painting with Louis Bail and Charles Hines for three years. While in Washington for a period of time, Story had met President Abraham Lincoln, drawing him in pencil. At a later date, Story again sketched Lincoln for three days in the Oval office, preparing to paint a commissioned portrait of the President, and actually painted several portraits of Lincoln. Story held the posts of curator concurrently at both the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. He was at the Metropolitan from 1889-1906, and the Wadsworth, 1899-1922. In 1904-1905, Story had been acting director at the Metropolitan. He was as a member of the Artists' Fund Society and the National Academy of Design, and his work is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut; and Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Oil on board, signed lower center, a Coe Kerr Gallery label on verso, and housed in a period molded giltwood frame. Coe Kerr Gallery was opened by Frederick Woolworth, on the upper east side of New York City in 1969. Artist Comments
"When you are a child, sometimes all you need is a puddle," says artist Onelio Marrero. He paints two young kids joyfully playing in a puddle after a day of being confined indoors due to the rain. He captures the fun and excitement of splashing around. The little girl frolics in full motion while her brother stares transfixed at his reflection.

About the Artist
Artist Onelio Marrero paints impressionist city scenes of everyday life. He captures the romanticism of New York City, from the picturesque fountains in Central Park to a glistening city street on a rainy afternoon. He creates a sense of nostalgia and intimacy with his work, offering the feeling that you have visited this particular scene before. “Each play of light, each texture, and each movement of a figure can have a captivating effect on me,” says Onelio. He studied at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where he mastered discerning color and values, giving his work a more spontaneous appearance. Onelio’s work is an appreciation for beauty in all of its greatest forms; nature, art, and people.
