About the Item

Gunnar JOHNSSON (1917-2007) Swedish School A whimsical portrait, probably dating to the early 1950s and painted during Gunnar’s stay in Spain. Translation- Credit Wikipedia “Gunnar Johnsson managed to capture movement in his abstract oil paintings like few other artists. He had several major exhibitions in Sweden and internationally (Spain and France). He liked to take his motifs from Spain, where he spent a lot of time, fascinated by the Spanish light. At the beginning of his career, Gunnar Johnsson was predicted a brilliant career by art critics. At his debut in Stockholm in 1951, for example, Tidningen MT-Stockholm wrote: "The end of the season comes with a first-class surprise and a pleasing one, at Gummesson's art gallery, where the debuting Gunnar Johnsson puts an expressive point for the gallery's beautiful line of fine And it is truly a brilliant ending - and an equally brilliant prelude for the young painter(born in Malmö in 1917. "With this his debut exhibition, Gunnar Johnsson has once again emerged in the forefront among today's young Swedish painters." Another Stockholm critic from the same period wrote: "One of the most pleasing artists is Gunnar Johnsson. His style of naturalistic weight and firmness bordering on the abstract sets him apart from most others." Gunnar Johnsson had several solo exhibitions, including at Gummesons in1951 and SDS hallen 1952 (debuts), then at Bleue 1965, 1966 and 1976, at Maria 1968 and 1978, at Engström 1979 and at Händer Malmö 1980. His work is included in many European collections.” Condition Excellent original condition, minor nibbles to frame. Size 45cm x 54cm (61cm x 70cm framed) 17.5 x 20 inches (24 x 27.5 inches framed)
