About the Item
Hans HERRMANN (1858-1942) Watercolour Painting c1900
An exceptional watercolour painting by one of Europe’s leading exponents Hans Herrmann. Signed, painted on paper, mounted on canvas in around 1900 and presented in its original exhibition frame.
Johann Emil Rudolf Herrmann, known as Hans was a German landscape and genre painter. He specialized in scenes of the Netherlands.
*Life and work (Credit Wikipedia)
He studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts with Otto Knille, Karl Gussow and Christian Wilberg. From 1879 to 1882, he took classes in landscape painting from Eugen Dücker at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Regular study trips took him to France, Italy, and Holland, where he attended the "Art Summer School" of the American-born painter, George Hitchcock. He opened his own studio in 1883, and visited Holland annually after 1886.
Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow, he was a founding member of the Vereinigung der XI, a progressive artists' group opposed to what they felt were outdated academic traditions. From 1879, he was a frequent exhibitor at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung and the Glaspalast in Munich, as well as at lesser-known exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Dresden, and outside Germany. From 1886 to 1890, he provided illustrations for Die Gartenlaube.

Circle of Fred MORGAN (1847-1927) c1890

Circle of Fred MORGAN (1847-1927) c1890
A sensitively painted portrait, possibly a study for a larger work, of a young country girl. Indistinctly signed ** Morgan, possibly Fred. Unfortunately Fred signed in a number of different ways depending on the grandeur of his work. However, a consistent element was the colour, a reddish brown similar to the colour of the signature on this painting. I can offer no provenance with this painting, so I am selling at as circle of Morgan rather than actually by him.
“Frederick Morgan ROI was an English painter of portraits, animals, domestic and country scenes. He became known for his idyllic genre scenes of childhood.
Morgan was born in London to John Morgan and his wife, Henrietta Hester Clare. His father was a successful genre artist sometimes known as 'Jury Morgan' (after one of his paintings The Gentlemen of the Jury). At the age of 14, he was taken out of school by his father who then tutored him in art. At the age of 16, while still studying with his father, his first picture, The Rehearsal, was exhibited at the Royal Academy, and, after a hiatus of several years, his paintings were shown there regularly. For a while he worked as a portrait artist for an Aylesbury photographer; this training proved to be crucial as it "taught him how to observe closely and to give the greatest attention to detail."
Eventually he turned to other subjects for his art, in particular idyllic genre scenes of country life and childhood. For many years, starting in 1874, Thomas Agnew & Sons' purchased all the work he produced.
Although an excellent portrait artist, Morgan had problems in depicting pets and barnyard animals - he enlisted the aid of either Arthur John Elsley...

Portrait of a girl with a rose and a red coral necklace (c. 1631)

David Finsonius (Veere 1597- Bergen op Zoom 1646/1648)
Portrait of a girl with a rose and a red coral necklace
With traces of the artist’s signature and annotated AETATIS S.V. 2 1⁄2 Ao 1631
Oil on panel, H. 104.5 x 79.5 cm
Provenance:
Purchased by Jonkheer Helenus Marius Speelman (1857-1909), Kasteel de Wittenburg; thence by
descent
The work shows a strong resemblance to a portrait by Finsonius in the North Brabant Museum. This
signed and dated "Girl with Basket and Cherries" (Inv. 15529), was painted just a year later, in 1632.
Not only are the paintings remarkably similar in overall size and format, in painting style, and in the
positioning of the girls in full length in their white lace dresses. They are also connected by the
iconographic scheme of the respective coral necklaces, each with a gold memorial medal hanging
from it. Although they are of course individuals, the faces are very similar in their depictions of
features such as eyes, nose, and lips. This points to the same technique applied by the same painter.
Finally, the handwriting is almost the same on the works by Finsonius known so far.
