About the Item
Ryland studied under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant (1845-1902), Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888), and Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) in Paris, and also at the South Kensington Art School and Heatherley's in London. The Neo-Classical approach of figures such as Lefebvre and Benjamin-Constant clearly had a strong influence of Ryland's own work, as did artists like Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) and Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912). Ryland's output consisted largely of watercolours and drawings depicting dreamy female sitters with strong features, often in imagined classical settings and costume, just like the work we have for sale
The Painting depicts two beautiful Grecian Woman overlooking a Veranda on fine painted Marble Terrace. The Mable painted terrace is adourned with flowers and birds flying around
The painting is extremely vivid and beautiful colors!

Henry Ryland
Henry Ryland was a British painter, book illustrator, decorator and designer. Ryland celebrated in his day and since for his Neoclassical pictures. He was a contemporary of Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton, among others and he shares stylistic and compositional traits with both artists. He painted beautiful women in classical settings, often on a promenade like this one. Unlike his contemporaries, however, Ryland worked almost exclusively in watercolor and this work is a particularly fine example of his style.
