About the Item

“The Survivors” is a piece made in 2021 and it is inspired by the flood legends. Flood myths are stories found in many cultures around the world that describe a great deluge or flood that destroys most or all life on Earth. These myths often feature a deity or divine being who causes the flood as a punishment or as a way to cleanse the world of evil or corruption. In many versions of these stories, a small group of survivors escape the flood and go on to repopulate the Earth. Perhaps the most well-known flood myth is the story of Noah's Ark from the Bible. Similar flood myths can be found in many other cultures. In Mesopotamian mythology, the hero Utnapishtim is warned of an impending flood by the god Ea and builds a boat to save himself, his family, and various animals. The Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, tells of a flood that is caused by the god Vishnu to cleanse the world of sin. Flood myths are often seen as symbolic stories that teach moral lessons or explain natural phenomena, such as the cycle of the seasons or the changing tides. They also highlight the resilience of human beings in the face of adversity and the power of nature to both destroy and renew life. The painting is executed in an impasto technique of oil colours, and oil bars/pastels.

This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...
