About the Item
Haitian artist Jacksin Mésidor painted this from his Caribbean coastal hometown of Cap-Haitien in the north of his native land. As Haitian folk art, the painting delivers an architype of what might otherwise be an everyday rural scene. Mésidor has filled his canvas with some 20 villagers streaming along a river’s banks, carrying upon their heads all manner of foods and material. And by dialing up the naturally existing vibrant colors of the area—starting with a backdrop of the Caribbean’s turquoise and the intense tropical greens—the artist captures not just a single moment actually transpiring before him, but the total traffic of a day distilled into this imagined moment of his creation.
