About the Item

Pausing for Refreshments by John Sanderson Wells (British 1872-1955) *see notes below signed oil on board, framed Framed: 13.5 x 18 inches Canvas : 10 x 14 inches Provenance: private collection, UK Condition: some minor scuffing inner edges, overall very good condition Description: This captivating oil painting presents a serene village scene, portraying Cavalry men with their horses stopping at a quaint roadside inn during a golden sunset. The artwork captures the essence of rural life, with the barmaid offering a warm welcome to the travelers whilst the groom tends to the horses. The horses, rendered with remarkable attention to detail, evoke a sense of movement and connection to the scene. John Sanderson-Wells (August 1872 – 16 March 1955) was a British painter renowned for his naturalistic depictions of equestrian scenes, portraits, and 18th-century genre subjects. He received his education at Woodard Schools and honed his artistic skills at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1903, Sanderson-Wells was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) and later served as its honorary treasurer. He exhibited his works at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Fine Art Society, and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. His oeuvre primarily features hunting scenes, sporting events, and animals, often commissioned by the gentry, resulting in many pieces remaining in private collections. Notable public holdings of his work include Banbury Town Hall and the Whitaker Rossendale Museum and Art Gallery. In 1948, Sanderson-Wells's work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the Summer Olympics, highlighting his prominence in the British art scene.
