About the Item

A Kitchen Scene by Jan Baptist Lambrechts (Antwerp, 1680–1731) The painting depicts a lively kitchen interior where a man, wearing a hat, raises a glass of red wine in a toast toward a young kitchen maid, also wearing a hat, who is busy slicing vegetables. On the table before them lie various vegetables, while more are scattered on the floor beside a large wine container. In the background, two figures appear, and atop a barrel rest a pewter jug and dish. The work, painted on an oak panel in the early 18th century, displays the characteristic style of Jan Baptist Lambrechts: animated figures, attention to detail, and a theatrical yet intimate setting. The painting is unsigned. The varnish has yellowed over time, and the surface would benefit from cleaning, but otherwise it remains in good condition. It is presented in a carved and gilded wooden frame, likely from the 18th century. Jan Baptist Lambrechts was born in Antwerp in 1680 and died in 1731. He was a Flemish painter best known for his genre scenes, often portraying kitchens, taverns, peasant life, and convivial gatherings. Lambrechts’ paintings reflect the continuation of the Flemish Baroque tradition, infused with humor and a strong sense of narrative. His works frequently capture everyday activities, dramatized with theatrical gestures and vivid expressions. Lambrechts trained as a painter in Antwerp, where he became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1716. His career unfolded during a period when Flemish genre painting was highly popular among collectors who appreciated scenes of domestic life and moralizing narratives disguised as rustic entertainment. His works often drew inspiration from predecessors such as David Teniers the Younger and Adriaen Brouwer, yet his style developed a more decorative and light-hearted character suited to 18th-century tastes. Paintings by Lambrechts can be found in private collections as well as in European museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp.
