Belgian Symbolist artist Jan Frans DeBoever (1872 – 1949), created symbolist/allegorical paintings throughout his lifetime. He centralized on allegorical and literary subjects, generally depicting the constant struggle of good vs. evil. This is consistently reflected by images of beautiful women interacting with skeletons, gargoyles and demons.
“Confidence”�, was painted c.1920, painted in mixed media of oil, graphite, pastel and gouache. The painting depict a beautiful woman, reclining on a courting skeleton, she smiles as he whispers into her ear, a red rose in one hand, and a guitar nearby to serenade her. In most paintings, DeBoever made his own frames that accented the paintings.
