About the Item
If you’ve been a longtime college football follower of the SEC, or the Southeastern Conference, you may have heard of this 1964 game in Shreveport, Louisiana. On December 29, the University of Arkansas Razorbacks in crimson and white played the University of Mississippi’s Ole Miss Rebels in The Bluebonnet Bowl, and handily won the contest 82-48 by racking up 52 points in the first half. As imagined here by American Surrealist Jean Jones Jackson (1907-1984), the wild escape of Arkansas’ mascot (actually a Russian boar, which is said to resemble the wild hogs of the Arkansas wilderness—you had to know), the game's outcome was regarded as a rout. Such a good feeling.
Perhaps the joy explains the unexpected butterflies, an example of the artist’s penchant for fantasy paintings featuring animals, children and even apparitions. It was no apparition, though, that she was much admired. Her works were collected by no less than renowned American art connoisseur Paul Mellon and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
