About the Item

A master of French contemporary figurative art, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul is especially admired for his depiction of ethereal, mysterious women, all of whom are typically frozen in a state of limbo that transcends the concept of time. Through his work, the innovative French painter, lithographer and illustrator exhibits a permanent state of creativity: he explains, “I don’t think, I just do it. Painting is something utterly magic.” Thus, he surrenders to intuition, and he enjoys the pleasure of painting as he creates inimitable work that truly delights the senses. Born to a Parisian family on July 13, 1935, young Jean-Pierre was continuously exposed to women, a recurring motif in his lifework, via the Cassigneul-founded fashion house Jean Dessès; For twenty-five years Jean-Pierre watched as his grandfather, and, afterwards, his father, direct Jean Dessès to shape Parisian haute couture. The men imposed a classical style that brought elegance and refinement to the simplest outfit, a theme that resonates with the style of Cassigneul’s acclaimed paintings. As with any fauvist painter, the use of vibrant color is central to the pieces. However, the motif of the mysterious woman is of tantamount importance to the work, style, and fame of Cassigneul. Four primary typologies exist: those young girls from the mid-sixties, based on models who had peopled his life; elegant society women, from Jean Dessès’ fashion house; portraits, inspired by his imagination; and melancholy portraits, of women who alludes to the passage of time and beauty. Aside from women, the vertical perspective of trees is another familiar theme in Cassigneul’s work: the alternating patches of light and shade that grace their foliage create a magic kaleidoscope of blues, greens and ochres, occasionally punctuated by a dab of red. Inclusion of fluffy petite dogs and horses are additional common inclusions. While his paintings are ingrained in his contemporary world—as the artist elucidates, “I have learned to look at the world around me, for that is the true answer to becoming a painter”—they are all the while relatable and timeless.
