About the Item

The Chinese opera is a quintessentially Chinese cultural performance art, and began around 1790, when theater companies from all over China arrived in Beijing, to perform for the Qing Emperor Qianlong's birthday. The Chinese opera is still performed in Taiwan, China, Singapore today. There are generally four main categories of roles: sheng (the male roles), dan (the female roles). A "Hua Dan" represents a more feisty, flirtatious young woman. The actor wears distinctive elaborate costumes and conveys the story, and their emotions through voice, movement, and gestures. "Farewell My Concubine" is a famous opera played by a male "Hua Dan". Front facing "Dan" and back facing "Dan" Sold separately or as a pair. Chen Jiu (b. 1957) Chen Jiu produced a body of work on the Chinese Opera: "Spring at Jade Pavilion", "The Tipsy Consort Guifei", "the Hegemon's Farewell to His Concubine", "Changing Face", amongst others. His works demonstrate a literati flair and expressionism, striving to capture sadness or joy at the corner of a character's eye, along an eyebrow or in expressive hand /finger gestures. (one can see the rough fingers as suggestive of a male in costume. An artist, Chen Jiu is also the director of Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and Shanghai Duolun Contemporary Museum.

Mountain Water Series n. I
By Christine Nguyen
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a series of five original photo based drawing and painting created on layered mylar as a negative to create the glowing images. The final piece is printed onto archival pigment paper. - Series of 5 original images - Edition of 3 - Signed and numbered by artist - Image dimensions 24" (h) x 19.8" (l); paper size: 30" (h) x 20"(l) - Unframed print - framing available upon request This technique was used to create an art exhibit installed at Los Angeles' Hammer Museum. Christine Nguyen is a Los Angeles based artist. She received her B.F.A from California State University, Long Beach and M.F.A from University of California, Irvine. As an artist, she is inspired by literature, science, nature, astronomy, geology, marine biology. The layering of works, creating depth, process and nature are important elements of her work . For example, salt crystallization has been used on found objects and encrusted on photo based works on paper. The salt crystallization process is similar to preserving some objects, while disintegrating others with time. By incorporating salt crystals onto the photo based paintings, the image presents a mystical otherworldly feel, capturing and refracting light and the slippage of time. Using photography’s processes as a point of departure, Christine Nguyen’s pioneering spirit led her to begin manipulating negatives and onward–creating her own by cutting, layering, and adding on. Nguyen’s subsequent explorations embrace drawing and object making alike, each body of work permeated with a sense of profound discovery. –Julie Dickover, Associate Registrar at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles from 2003 to 2010 Her work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally such as at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kunsthalle zu Kiel, Kiel, Germany; Laguna Beach Art Museum, Laguna Beach;Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena and are in many private collections. --- Images show: - Mountain Water...

Contemporary Chinese Ink Wash Painting by Li Jin
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary ink painting on paper by Chinese artist Li Jin (1958-) presented in a white shadowbox frame. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5". Provenance: Purchased in 2017 from the Ink Studio at West Bund Art and Design Fair, Shanghai, China. Li Jin (1958-, Tianjin, China) is an ink master who draws from the tradition of Chinese literati ink painting and creates contemporary works celebrating all aspects of everyday life. Having explored color washes for two decades, Li Jin has translated them into a masterful control of tonality-the "five colors of ink"-in a series of monochrome paintings in the expressionistic-abstract "Da Xie Yi" manner. Through the ink medium's inherent sensitivity and ambiguity, they evoke the nuances of human existence and raise profound questions about self-representation and subjectivity. Trained at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (graduated in 1983) and has been a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink art...
