John George Brown
Shoeshine Boys with a Dog 1897

1897

$32,000

About

A wonderful genre scene painting with two shoeshine boys and a dog by British American artist John George Brown (1831-1913). Brown was born in Durham, England, and studied at Newcastle-on-Tyne, in the Edinburgh Academy, and at the schools of the National Academy of Design after moving to New York in 1853. In 1866 he became one of the charter members of the Water-Colour Society, of which he was president from 1887 to 1904. He became well known for his painted representations of street child life, street urchins, bootblacks, and newsboys. His paintings of these sympathy-arousing children were so popular in a Victorian era of increased industrialization that he became rich from painting sales as well as royalties from lithographs. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1897 upper right, and housed in a fine quality new giltwood frame. Dimensions: 14 in H x 18.25 in W, actual. Ref:7
