Jorge Chávez Carrillo was a Mexican painter born in Colima and known for his contributions to muralism and modern art in Mexico. His work often depicted social themes, indigenous culture, and historical narratives. He was influenced by figures like Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. He studied under Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as part of La Esmeralda school in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Chávez Carrillo created murals in various public spaces, particularly in Colima, where he left a significant artistic legacy. His style combined realism with elements of abstraction, and his work reflected a strong commitment to Mexican identity and culture. A museum and cultural center bearing his name is in Colima. This painting is in excellent condition and retains a simple black painted wood frame. Its wonderful iconography is presented in brilliant colors and very strong cubistic dynamism.

This luminist and atmospheric evening seascape by Granville Redmond (1871 - 1935) was painted on Catalina Island off the California coast c.1920. Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became a highly respected landscape painter, shifting between vibrant Impressionist poppy...

Spirit
By William Y. Cooper
Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper.
William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher.
Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969.
His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.”
Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree.
Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...
