People are dressed in white, red, and blue striped clothing in addition to the masks and costumes. Of particular interest is the central figure wearing a red mask with elaborate gold ornamentation. Barong Dance Painting, Original Barong Dance Performance Signed with location in lower edge ("KT Sunu, Ubud") Cloth wrapped around wood panel. Unframed. Board size: 21"H x 23.5"W Balinese art is art of Hindu-Javanese origin that grew from the work of artisans of the Majapahit Kingdom, with their expansion to Bali in the late 14th century. From the sixteenth until the twentieth centuries, the village of Kamasan, Klungkung (East Bali), was the centre of classical Balinese art. During the first part of the twentieth century, new varieties of Balinese art developed. Since the late twentieth century, Ubud and its neighboring villages established a reputation as the center of Balinese art. Ubud and Batuan are known for their paintings, Mas for their woodcarvings, Celuk for gold and silver smiths, and Batubulan for their stone carvings. Covarrubias describes Balinese art as, "... a highly developed, although informal Baroque folk art that combines the peasant liveliness with the refinement of classicism of Hinduistic Java, but free of the conservative prejudice and with a new vitality fired by the exuberance of the demonic spirit of the tropical primitive". Eiseman correctly pointed out that Balinese art is actually carved, painted, woven, and prepared into objects intended for everyday use rather than as object d 'art Balinese paintings are notable for their highly vigorous yet refined, intricate art that resembles baroque folk art with tropical themes.

The Goddess Kali Appears to a Hunter - Balinese Ubud Painting Mask Dance
Located in Soquel, CA
Incredibly detailed depiction of the goddess Kali appearing before a hunter by Konci (Balinese, 20th Century). Overflowing with details and imagery, this piece depicts the goddess Kali in the forest along with other godlike figures. A hunter is kneeling before them, wearing a quiver, and with hands folded in prayer. Kali is depicted in a traditional Balinese style, but with a multitude of faces engulfed in flames. The jungle background is full of swirling plants. Signed "Konci" in the lower right corner. Cloth wrapped around wood panel. Unframed. Image size: 35"H x 25.5"W This carved, wooden mask represents the mythical creature known in Bali as Banaspati Raja, meaning “King of the Forest,” also called the Barong Ket. Lion-like masks such as this one are the most common type, but Barong can take on the features of a number of different animals, including wild boar, dog, deer, and tiger, individually or in composite form. In Balinese society, all Barong masks...

Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style. The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless. About Bali Art...
