"Girl with a Hat" Contemporary Abstract Surrealist Figurative Portrait Painting

2024

About the Item

Dynamic abstract portrait by contemporary Houston-based artist Margo Lunsford. The piece features a central fractured image of a figure with their arms crossed above their head. Signed by the artist on the reverse. Currently hung in a black frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 33.75 in. x W 33.75 in. Artist Biography: Margo Lunsford-Chacon, born alongside an identical twin within a dynamic Caucasian-Hispanic American family, delves deeply into the complexities of multiracial identity. Her artistic sensibility is molded by the rich tapestry of her heritage, navigating the dualities of connection and alienation. The adversities of mental illness, trauma, and addiction in her early life have fueled her creative journey, transforming personal strife into artistic brilliance. Lunsford-Chacon honed her craft at the Glassell School of Art and Houston Baptist University's painting program, where she was profoundly influenced by her mentor, Michael Roque Collins. Collins encouraged her to dismantle her emotional defenses and infuse her art with a resonant spiritual depth. His mentorship helped forge her unique artistic voice, marked by themes of fragmentation and renewal, and an unflinching examination of the human condition. Her art serves as a powerful medium for transformation, challenging viewers to explore and resolve their internal contradictions. Her pieces are more than visual representations of memory and identity; they are catalysts for deep self-reflection, inspiring courage, acceptance, and transcendence. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Margo Lunsford-Chacon leads a life filled with passion and adventure, shared with her devoted husband. With a 16-year career in digital design, she seamlessly blends art with technology, utilizing human-centered design principles to enhance digital user experiences. Through her art and professional work, she invites us all to explore the rich complexity of our identities and the deep-seated beauty of our collective human experience.

"Beatificado" Modern Tabloid Inspired Religious Social Commentary Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Modern, large scale social commentary painting by California artist John Valdez. Comes with the original sketch as well as a book about the artist. Inspired by the cover of a Mexican tabloid, Valadez invites the viewer to examine the duality of a society that mourns the death of an iconic religious leader and neglects those close to them who are perhaps deemed not worthy of consideration. The bold red headline reads “El cardenal Gabiri será beatificado” (Cardinal Gabiri will be beatified) above a large accompanying image of the cardinal in his casket and two smaller images, one of sobbing mourners and another of the cardinal sitting at the altar. Dividing the image is a subhead that reads, “El pueblo católico está de luto” (the Catholic people are mourning) placed above a depiction of four young boys who seem to be sniffing glue. The adjacent text reads “The indifference of the adults is the cause behind the issues these forgotten children have to live.” This work was exhibited at the Pacific Standard Time, Long Beach Museum of Art in 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2012, as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL in 2013. Signed by artist in front lower right corner as well as titled and dated in front lower left corner. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: John Valadez...
