'Lost in the Clouds' is a large acrylic and gold leaf on canvas landscape painting of square format created by American artist Jim Seitz in 2023. Jim Seitz was born in Chicago and currently resides in Louisiana. He grew up in Texas and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He began showing talent and love for art as a young child, becoming more serious during his college years. During the time he worked for the university, providing medical illustrations for the Science Department,
He has traveled extensively throughout his life, living for several years in the Middle East, before moving to South East Asia. His travel experiences have included everything from cave explorations in the mountains of Iran to working in the jungles of New Guinea and Borneo. His preferred medium during that time was ink and watercolor, as it was easy to transport to and from remote locations.
While influenced by various 19th century landscape artists, Jim has developed a unique technique characterized by tonal, minimalist representation of his subject matter. Through this approach, less becomes more. His appreciation for color and his creative perspective lend to pieces that are traditional, moving to abstract. His utilization of gold leaf applied over heavy textured canvas and then glazed with multiple layers of acrylics provides an effect that is quickly becoming this artist’s signature style.

Though we don’t generally think about it, thirteenth-century religious art actually reflects medieval European perceptions of events that occurred in the ancient Middle East. In the Divine Beauty project I filter sacred iconography through the secular lens of today’s societal perceptions by placing found commercial fashion imagery (from magazines and other sources) in the context of painted religious narratives, producing a clash of ideas that throw both sources into question.
Like many Western New Yorkers, I was raised Catholic. I attended a Catholic elementary school, went to church every day. While the indoctrination didn’t last beyond childhood, it did instill a lifelong affinity for the visual traditions of sacred art. But, as the recent economic meltdown has made apparent, conspicuous global consumption has replaced western religion today as the favored path to personal fulfillment. Artist’s Statement
The Realm of Imaginary Mystery continues the narrative approach I have been experimenting with, with much of the linguistic expression coming from elements of mature Tibetan wall paintings. Narrative in painting is something that Western modern art and Chinese literati painting have strongly rejected, but I believe that it is precisely the way in which traditional Tibetan art is expressed. It is also the native language system that I have always been searching for. It is not defunct, it has just not been activated to connect to the contemporary context. Unlike the traditional narrative, my narrative is scattered and fragmented. Like the chaos of the times. This work was painted during the epidemic, which made me experience the uncertainty of world affairs and the impermanence of life. The word "vague and confused" is actually a homophone of "Sumi". The reason why I use "vague and confused" instead of "Sumi" is that I think "vague and confused" is more suitable for the world we live in, which is unreal and confusing. It is in the virtual that we gain knowledge, produce and record history. Perhaps when historians study our generation in 2,000 years' time, the internet will be the great transparent medium in which trivial or significant records of the virtual world will be recorded, like a phantom suspended over this era. When a thing is erased from the virtual world, that is perhaps its demise in the historical sense. Perhaps the world we live in, the dreams we hold on to and the art we create are, from the beginning, just a phantom of illusion. GADE
