"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment.
A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain."

His focus and sense of achievement ring out. Drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes render the scene, but also note the toned wood coming through as color and texture. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact.

The surface is very interesting – drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes to be sure, but also the toned wood coming through as color and texture. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact.

Joseph Maresca was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1946, and currently resides in Rhinecliff, Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BFA in industrial design from Pratt Institute, and a master’s degree in arts education from New York University. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Katonah Museum of Art, and even the White House—in honor of his design for an official White House tree ornament depicting Vanderbilt Mansion. Academically, Maresca has taught as an adjunct professor at New York University and at City University of New York, and has authored a book—WPA Buildings: Architecture and Art of the New Deal (2017)—about the influence of Works Project Administration architecture. The book examines the social impact on American cities of the imposing government buildings that were funded by the WPA to restore public confidence during the Great Depression. Maresca has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY and Michelle Rosenfeld Gallery in New York City.

We are always self discovering and these self discoveries take us in surprising directions. We must gain strength from what we learn from each other as well as listen to that persistent, ever present, intuitive self. The connection of one’s own rich heritage and person growth will travel into the inevitable and critical connection between African Americans and Africa. These connections are rich and very important. They Exist! My work, I hope, will serve as a creative connection between the African diaspora and western culture. It is this connection that cause my creative forces to react."

Artist's Statement: "I typically paint abstractly, but this is part of a recent series of paintings that is figurative and symbolic. They harken back to 80s neo-Expressionism - my favorite contemporary art movement. I tend not to beat collectors over the head with fatuous "meanings" of my work, but this one does have a subtext, a rather personal one. But you are welcome to read whatever you want into it."

“Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings. The negative space is often so meticulously worked that it’s almost as if the objects – usually simple shapes – are there as much to complement the background as vice versa. Despite the often bold colors there is an elegance about his paintings that prevents them from being either loud or decorative. "
