About the Item

A black and white pointillism feminist figurative painting of Marie Antoinette by artist Maurizio Battifora on view at the "GO LOCO" exhibition at Mash Gallery in Los Angeles, June 10th - July 27th ABOUT THIS WORK - Cherubs are probably most well-known for symbolizing innocence. But even the innocent have something to say. Make an entrance; let them see you; let them talk..... For the last 7 years Battifora has been inspired by the iconic woman, Marie Antoinette. She is a modern-day metaphor for controversy, luxury, abundance, and an unapologetic love of beautiful things; in a time when more and more people are obsessed with celebrities, politicians, selfies, and influencers. Battifora sees her as perhaps the "first" influencer in modern history. Living in a male-dominated society she found her voice and power by reinventing herself. This yearning for individualistic expression through social media is something we see today around the world. Marie Antoinette’s head can be cut off a hundred times, but she keeps coming back again and again in different shapes and forms. Battifora's paintings are a celebration of unashamed fabulousness and the power in reinventing oneself and becoming what we want others to see. In his M.A. paintings, the Queen looks back at us with a defiant and unabashed stare. She looks at the viewer with confidence as if to tell them: "I'm looking at you; you are not looking at me". Do you have to like it? No. Do you have to deal with it? Of course! ABOUT THE ARTIST - Mauricio Battifora is an Italian American artist that established his craft in Costa Rica, Miami, and Los Angeles over the last 15 years. Battifora's work is found in private collections of high-net-worth individuals in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, and New York. Battifora studied in Costa Rica, and later at Miami Dade College, where he received his artistic education under artist Edwin Montalvo, but the majority of Battifora's work is empirical, and the techniques he utilizes are self-taught. From 2005 to 2008 he was a realistic portraitist; later, his technique evolved into a modern pointillist. Today he considers himself a figurative/impressionist artist, juxtaposing medium and small, thin, and distinct brushstrokes of acrylics over canvas. Battifora has a tendency for bold colors around a central figure. He prefers to let viewers interpret his art themselves and to let them enjoy the art without telling them how it should make them feel.
