About the Item
Acrylic on canvas, signed and dated (lower right), 91cm x 62cm (112cm x 82cm framed).
(Provenance: in the collection of the artist Michael Leonard (British 1933-2023) until his death in 2023. The work had been purchased directly from Murfin.)
Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. During the 1980s Murfin participated in Artist in School schemes in Cambridgeshire and nearby counties, and 1983 gained a major award from Eastern Arts Association. In 1990 he was visiting lecturer at University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and artist-in-resident at Oundle School. Murfin is a realistic painter with a wide range of subjects who took part in many mixed showed, including Tolly Cobbold/Eastern Arts 2nd National Exhibition, 1979; 2nd International Drawings Triennale, Nuremberg, Germany, 1982; Drawings for All, Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, 1986; and British Council touring show Picture People, 1989–90. Murfin has exhibited widely, both in the UK and internationally. His work is contained in many regional art galleries, as well as the Government Art Collection. This work continues a series of paintings in which the artist finds the beauty of the male form, here in one of his series of paintings of farriers.
