About the Item
Fantastical portrayal of five white doves surrounded by flowers and clusters of grapes in a dreamy, colorful vineyard garden setting by Mohammad Hourian (Iranian/American, 1955-2014). Signed "Hourian" lower left. Displayed in a white metal frame. Acrylic on sheetrock, Gypsum panel. Image size: 26.25"H X 47.25"L.
Iranian born artist Mohammad Hourian studied and worked in the ancient art of miniature since he was 12 years old. Under the tutelage of Iran's most famous miniaturist, Hourian studied this unique tradition employing arabesque, linear detail, fantasy color and delicate form, and he honed his own imaginative and original style. The quality of his paintings conveys an elevated sense of whimsy and lyrical movement, with transcendental images that have been aptly called "perceptual fantasy."
Awarded the Gold Medal at the Institute of Tehran Exhibit in 1975, Hourian also won the First Prize at the Tehran Painters Exhibit in 1976. That same year, his first exhibit in Germany at the Goethe Institute was highly praised in the German press. He achieved a BA from the University of Tehran in 1977 and taught at the University the following year. At the age of 19, he won public recognition in his first one-man show at the Gallery of Tehran. At age 20, he became the youngest Iranian artist to be elected to the National Academy of Fine Arts. He later moved to the U.S. and exhibited his work at the Hourian Fine Art Gallery in San Francisco.

Depicts doves over an archway leading to Old City Jerusalem

Ben Avraham Nahmani is a self-taught artist who began painting in his native Meknes, Morocco at age seven. After his immigration to Israel he studied at the Avraham Ofek School of Art in Tel Aviv. He paints in an impressionist style and expresses his love and devotion to Judaism and Israel through varied media techniques including copper beating, pastel colors, and oil paints. Presently, he combines these various media which heighten the joyous tone of his works. Ben Avraham Nhamani draws his subjects from Jewish life, Kabbalah, faith and Jewish tradition. Each of his miniatures has its own motif but all of his themes are tied an overriding theme of world peace.
Ben Avraham Nhamani says "Each painting is for me a special experience both spiritually and artistically as I express it here in a mixed-media: an integrated technique, combining different artistic mediums: pastels, acrylic paint, aquarelle, ink , spray oil; each technique lending its own effect to achieve the total harmonious presence of the work as a whole. The basis of corrugated cardboard of different layers adds depth to the painting and its meaning." One can recognize the holly city of Jerusalem surrounded by its wall and its famous gate living peacefully. Ben Avraham Nhamani adds: "The white dove symbolizes peace finally coming; it has an olive twig in its beak as it was when Noah sent a dove after the flood (which also symbolizes wars) to check then if the water dried out and the world could be a peaceful place to live. The dove hangs over Jerusalem and the city is even part of the dove's wing so peaceful it is. The flowers express beauty and growth that exist only when there is peace as well as prosperity represented here by the gold and silver colors. The ideal peace will exist when the Messiah son of David will come expressed here by the Shofar. His coming can be hurried by our good deeds and our longing for him. In microcosm Jerusalem represents every Jewish home which is the basis of the Jewish people and of one's life; spiritually, emotionally and physically as well as stated in the Talmud that the whole blessing a man receives is for his wife and a good wife is attuned to her husband as well. The Shofar expresses the nullification to Gd.'s will as it is at Rosh Hashana (the new Jewish Year) when we take upon ourselves the Yoke of Gd. In a couple or family it means that all the members make an effort and don't have it "their way" but "our way" by compromising."

One can recognize the holy city of Jerusalem surrounded by its wall and its famous gate living peacefully. While their works bear a certain similarity this is not to be confused with Israeli Indian artist Edward ben Avram from Bombay, India. He has shown in prominent galleries in Safed, Tzfas with the other well known artists from the artists colony such as Nicky Imber, Shalom of Safed, Dorit Gur, Doron Cohen, Frenel Frankel, ·Kaszemacher, Raphael Abecassis...
