About the Item

The white wedding. In this series, the composition serves as a metaphor for the influence of Western ideals and norms on the cultural context. The narrative is that the white wedding symbolizes the imposition of Western values and customs on traditional practices, which results in the blending of cultures in the holy matrimony. I used this composition to reflect on themes of cultural authenticity, adaptation, and preservation, which I am subjecting my audience to seeing the impacts of globalization and colonization in diverse societies while celebrating the richness of cultural diversity and the enduring spirit of tradition in the wedding context. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. About Artist Okunade Olamilekan (b. 1988) is a contemporary Nigerian artist specialising in painting. He is a full-time practising studio artist residing in Oyo State, Nigeria. He was born in Lagos State, Nigeria. He graduated in 2017 with a B.Tech (Hon. Fine and Applied Arts) from Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria. His works are strongly influenced by and reflect the cultural happenings and situations that affect the black community, laying more emphasis on women and their places in society, with the medium choice of acrylic paint on canvas. He has his core source of inspiration from his immediate environment, gender physiognomy, and the ups and downs of the struggle of society. He has a residential atelier where he works and also trains young emerging artists for internships. He is a member of Global Arts in Medicine and also a co-founder of Sip and Paint Your Mental Health. Artist Statement My art is a tribute, an embodiment of strength, resilience, and quiet but powerful stories that shape my socio-relatable and subconscious community. As a son raised singlehandedly by a single mother, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices, perseverance, and unwavering love that defined and shaped a typical African child's upbringing. All my experiences with my mother and the women who surround me influence my work, fueling my exploration of identity, struggle, and beauty found in women's resilience. Through bold colors, intricate geometric patterns, and layered composition, I tell my stories of women's strength. My art is a reflection of the past and present, blending heritage with contemporary narratives. I'm drawn to scenes and themes of equity in women's pedagogy; my art serves as a listening ear that has the power to bring awareness to the unseen emotions that the she-gender carries. Every art piece I create is personal; my art is an extension of my soul search, subconscious awakening, and the gratitude I hold for the women who shaped me. My top goal is to evoke emotion and start a critical and crucial conversation in honor of the silent battles fought by so many from the generation before my precious mother to the one coming after her. Art to me is storytelling, and my story is still unfolding.
