About the Item

In the time of my mother and the women before her in her generation line, women are not allowed to talk or have a genuine opinion on the crucial and critical matters of emergency in the community, no matter how brilliant her opinion is, it must rot within her stomach and shits out to the latrine. My mother on the other hand is a brilliant homemaker and an orderly leader who never gets to talk about matter that concerns her and are even more peculiar to her. As her son, I watched her and tapped from her knowledge and sense, which makes me stand out as a grown-up adult now. Now, in my opinion, which I believe many will agree with, women are better kings and they are not ordinary mere women, by sitting at my mom's feet while growing up, I learned that, if women living in a male-dominated world were given an up voice, their light will shine brighter, and they will make a good community and build a strong castle. This piece is about giving women a voice, and opportunities to rule and live without being dominated and sabotaged, the painting calls for equity for all women in our life, be they mothers, a wife, a daughter, a sister, or a widow Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. About Artist Okunade Olamilekan (b. 1988) is a contemporary Nigerian artist specialising in painting. His works are strongly influenced by and reflect the cultural happenings and situations that affect the black community laying more emphasis on women and their places in society with the medium choice of acrylic paint on canvas. He has his core source of inspiration from his immediate environment, gender physiognomy, and the ups and downs of the struggle of society. He has a residential atelier where he works and also trains young emerging artists for internships. He is a member of Global Arts in Medicine and also a co-founder of Sip and Paint Your Mental Health. Artist Statement The ideas, issues and events arising from man's quest to contain and contend with these forces form the subject of my paintings. Given this background, my paintings are subtle but much defined with interlocking and wedges of colour combined like a mosaic to produce a solid, architectural structure, enhanced by the textured surface of the paint with women accorded with prominent attention, focus and more emphasis in my composition. Women live in a male-dominated society, based on local cultural traditions with few rights and are at the receiving end of men's activities and yet strive to eke out and sustain living. I celebrate them by weaving my composition around them during their hours of need, joy, pain, and other human activities.
