DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
This vibrant oil painting by Pepe Antequera masterfully captures a costumbrista scene in the heart of Barcelona, likely La Rambla, with its characteristic tree-lined promenade, central kiosk, and bustling atmosphere. The piece is executed with a loose, expressive brushstroke in a post-impressionist style, dominated by warm tones, violets, and greens.
The scene depicts a moment of daily life, populated by a variety of figures: a sailor in a white uniform, a woman in a yellow dress, indistinct passersby, and even a small dog that adds charm and movement. All of it is bathed in a vibrant, luminous atmosphere that conveys the urban hustle and bustle with freshness, while retaining a strong human dimension.
The painterly treatment—some areas sketched, others more defined—highlights the artist's interest in sensory impression and the emotional immediacy of lived experience. The work recalls, through its free execution and cheerful palette, the style of artists such as Joaquín Mir, Augusto Torres, José Cruz Herrera (in his urban scenes), or even Eduardo Vicente.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Pepe Antequera (José Antequera Álvarez, 1935–2023) was a multifaceted Andalusian artist who settled in Barcelona from early childhood. Though he gained considerable fame as a radio announcer during the 1970s and 1980s—with shows such as Los Olés de la Canción—he also developed a solid career as a self-taught painter. His body of work includes urban scenes, bullfighting, portraits, and landscapes, all approached with a lively, direct, and colorful style.
A lover of everyday life and a keen observer, Antequera captured the essence of the streets with freshness and humanity. For over five decades, he balanced his work in media with art exhibitions, especially in Barcelona and Menorca, where he often spent his summers. His painting is considered an emotional chronicle of popular life, with impressionist influences and a consistently recognizable signature.
He passed away in Barcelona in 2023 at the age of 87, leaving behind a body of work now valued for its authenticity, vibrancy, and documentary spirit.

Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall.
His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33.
Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years.
In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful.
His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...
