Period: 19th Century
"Winter Wonderland"
Located in Edinburgh, GB
Unidentified Artist (19th Century) "Winter Wonderland" (1885) This charming 19th-century oil painting captures a winter landscape, depicting three figures trudging through the snow, engaged in animated conversation. The scene is set against a serene rural backdrop, where bare trees and a distant village silhouette convey the stark beauty of winter. The soft glow of the sky, transitioning from warm hues to cool whites, enhances the tranquil yet brisk atmosphere of a cold winter’s day. Plot & Interpretation The three travelers appear to be peasants or laborers, possibly returning home or embarking on a journey. Their layered winter clothing, fur hats, and backpacks suggest they are seasoned wanderers or workers, braving the elements. The gesturing figure in the middle seems to be engaged in storytelling or giving directions, adding a sense of movement and interaction. The snow-covered ground and delicate shadows create depth, emphasizing the hardship and resilience of rural life in the 19th century. Materials & Condition Medium: Oil on canvas Framed Dimensions: 47 x 46 cm Canvas Dimensions: 24 x 34 cm Frame: Ornate giltwood frame, enhancing the painting’s classical aesthetic Condition: Well-preserved with minor age-related patina, in line with its 1885 dating Historical Context & Artistic Style Likely influenced by Northern European realism, particularly Russian, German, or Scandinavian schools that depicted harsh winters and rural peasant life. Comparable to the works of Adolf von Meckel, Vasily Perov, or Carl...

L’embarquement by Gaston La Touche
Located in New Orleans, LA
Gaston La Touche 1854 - 1913 French L’embarquement The Embarkment Signed "Gaston La Touche" (lower right) Oil on panel A fashionable group of merrymakers boards a rowboat at sundown in this oil on panel by renowned French painter Gaston La Touche. Softly lit and lushly detailed, the work represents the artist’s talent for capturing the gaiety of the Belle Époque. With its luminous coloring and feathery brushwork, this oil evokes the style and joie de vivre of the era rendered in La Touche’s distinctive, mature style. Fresh and airy, the work is a beautiful example of the artist’s skill at capturing the subtle qualities of light and color. Set against the plein air backdrop of a wooded pond awash in the soft glow of the golden hour, the scene reflects the influence of the Impressionists. The subject also recalls works by Manet, Monet and Renoir, who delighted in depictions of modern leisure among the expanding middle class. The scene is an informal one, and its unconventional cropping suggests that the viewer is invited to take a seat in the boat and join the group on their outing. Such relaxed, inviting scenes were remarkably popular among contemporary, modern audiences. However, La Touche's style is singular, possessing an element of fantasy and romance that set him apart from the Impressionists. Gaston La Touche was born in St. Cloud, outside of Paris, in 1854, and he showed a keen interest in art from a young age. At ten years old, he began taking private art instruction, which lasted until 1870, when his family was forced to flee to Normandy amid the Franco-Prussian War. This was the only formal art training La Touche would ever receive. Despite his lack of Academy training, he made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1875 with a sculptural medallion and etchings, and he exhibited his first painting at the Salon of 1881. Although he began his career painting dark-toned realist compositions, by 1890, his style had shifted to what would become his signature — a lighter, brighter, idealistic society world. The artist was associated with practically all of the most influential artists and thinkers of late 19th century France, including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Émile Zola, who frequently met at the legendary Cafe de la Nouvelle Athenes to share their thoughts on modern society. In 1900, he was named a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur and an Officer in 1909. Additionally, he was well-decorated at the grand...

Girl in restaurant in Paris. 19th century, oil on wood, 46x37, 5 cm
Located in Riga, LV
Girl in restaurant in Paris. 19th century, oil on wood, 46x37,5 cm Eduardo Léon Garrido (1856-1949) Eduardo León Garrido was born in Madrid in 1856. He falls within the Group of Spaniards in Paris, as he warns in his style, with clear influences of Impressionism, somewhat reminiscent of Manet. He was the eldest son of Luis Garrido Fernandez, an official at the Ministry of Finance. His father would have liked him to embrace an administrative career but Eduardo León moved towards the artistic career. Trained in the Escuela Superior de Madrid, he painted his first work « the theft of the Sabine women », at only eighteen years old. Then he entered the Studio of Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896). He will always consider the latter as his true teacher. In 1875, at the age of 19, he arrived in Paris to continue his studies with a scholarship from the city of Madrid. The same year he exhibited for the first time at the Salon where he presented a « Saint Jerome ». Very quickly he appears to be noticed by the famous merchant of the Rue Chaptal, Adolphe Goupil, for who he worked a few years. Notice that Vincent van Gogh worked for Goupil & Cie from 1869 till 1876 (his brother Theo entered in 1873. From 1876 on Garrido exhibits portraits and stylish, contemporary scenes. Catalogues indicates that he changed his dealer for the gallery Borniche around 1880. During the years 1882-1894 he did not expose anymore at the Salon (except once, in 1887, with the portrait of his friend, the painter Bréauté) . However, he painted a lot to feed the gallery of his dealer and a few galleries in Madrid. During that period he had also some student : Anne Blanche Dillaye (1851-1931), the american painter, studied with him from 1885 till 1887. From 1892 onwards it is the merchant Félix Gérard (one of the first dealers of work by Manet and Courbet), of the Rue Lafitte, which concludes with him an exclusive contract. He probably imposed to the artist to paint a different style. This sealed a radical departure from his 1880-1890 period, during which he painted the streets of Paris, café terraces, newspaper kiosks, and was likened to very fashionable Belle-Époque artists. From 1892 onwards, Garrido painted almost solely gallant scenes in the 18th century style, in keeping with current tastes and clients’ demands. Meanwhile, Garrido left Paris. In 1888 he established a studio on the banks of the Marne at La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire (Val-de-Marne near Paris). He married there in 1892 one of its models, Leonie Beck, and in 1893 their first child, Louis- Edouard, was born. He is quickly integrated into local life and became an art teacher in the Philotechnic Association of La Varenne. From 1895 onwards he presented new works at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1914, he obtained the French citizenship, while two of his son went into battle (World War I). He continued painting, mainly landscapes, portraits of family members (children, granddaughter Odile born in 1923) and flowers. At the end of his life and because of poor eyesight he painted exclusively flower bouquets. In 1939, Eduardo León and his wife Leonie arrive at Caen. They settled with their son, Louis- Edouard, who resided there. Eduardo Leon Garrido died there in 1949. He is buried in the family burial at the cemetery Venoix in Caen. Some of his paintings can be seen in the Museo del Prado (Madrid), the Museo Carmen Thyssen (Málaga), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Argentina), Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and private collections such as the Bellver Collection in Sevilla. In the Musée Charles Léandre...

Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church, 1891
Located in Stockholm, SE
"Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church" is a captivating work by Swedish artist Albert Larsson, painted in 1891 when Larsson was 22 years old. The painting captures a landscape steeped in the quietude of dusk, with a sky ablaze in hues of red and orange, signalling the end of the day. The silhouettes of trees are rendered with astonishing detail against the twilight sky, showcasing Larsson's early mastery of light and shadow. Dominating the pastoral scene is a traditional windmill, its blades stilled against the sky, alongside the spire of a church that pierces the horizon. These structures, together with the meticulously painted trees, are testaments to the human presence within the natural world, suggesting a harmony between the two. A notable feature is the small water-filled furrow in the field, which catches the fading light of the sky, creating a pathway of reflection leading the eye through the composition. This detail highlights Larsson's skill in using light to draw attention to elements within his paintings. Albert Larsson, born on November 4, 1869, in Malmö and passing on August 31, 1952, in Lund, was an artist deeply influenced by his education in Copenhagen at the Art Academy and later at Peder Severin Krøyer...
