His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France. In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948). D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style. D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois. Fearing was a professor emeritus in university's Department of Art and Art History. He taught at the university from 1947-87, and was presented the College of Fine Arts' E. William Doty Award in 2007, the college's highest honor recognizing him as an individual of distinction in his field who has demonstrated extraordinary interest in the college. "Kelly Fearing was the quintessential Renaissance man," said College of Fine Arts Associate Dean Ken Hale. "He was an artist, an author and an educator. His talent was extraordinary. He worked in almost all traditional mediums and excelled in oil painting and collage. Fearing was very well educated in all of the arts and enthusiastically passed that knowledge on to literally thousands of students. The University of Texas and the state of Texas have benefited greatly from the creativity and generosity of Kelly Fearing. His passing is a loss for us all." Born in Fordyce, Ark., Fearing was raised in Louisiana, studied art at Louisiana Tech University, earned a master's degree from Columbia University and went to Fort Worth during World War II to serve his country in a defense job. While being trained in graphic drafting for a company that was making bombers for the U.S. military, Fearing was introduced to other aspiring artists in the Fort Worth area. This group of avant-guard printmakers and artists became known as the Fort Worth Circle, and Fearing was one of its core members. Collectively, they were instrumental in introducing modernist ideas to Texas art. After teaching at Texas Wesleyan College from 1945-47, he came to The University of Texas at Austin as the Ashbel Smith Professor in Art in 1947. He retired from the university in 1987 and continued to work as a professional artist. His art has been referred to as magical realist, mystical naturalist and Romantic surrealist. As a pioneer in art education in America, Fearing founded The University of Texas Junior Art Project, the first visual arts outreach program of its kind in Texas. The program offered children of all ages and from all economic backgrounds free, university-based instruction and exposure to the arts. Kelly Fearing has been an important artist working in Texas since the 1940s. After doing his graduate work at Columbia University in New York City, Fearing established himself as a surrealist painter and print maker in Fort Worth, and then became one of the founding members of the art faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. He has had recent exhibitions at the Valley House Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and at the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery in Austin, Texas. Fearing lives and works in Austin, Texas. A superb oil on canvas Post Impressionist work by British artist Forrest Hewit. This vibrant work depicts an external café scene under trees, with a dozen figures seated or standing at tables. It dates to circa 1930. One can feel the summer heat in this colourful piece. One of the most popular resort towns on the Italian Riviera, little Portofino has just over 500 permanent residents. But that all changes on summer days when the sun is shining, and the yachting set drops anchor in the harbour to wander about. Boutiques, art galleries, cafes and restaurants line the tiny streets. Housed in a fine frame, 35 inches by 25 inches framed. Good condition. Forrest Hewit (1870-1956) was a very unusual character amongst his fellow artists. Whereas many of his contemporaries turned away from commerce or the professions to become painters, he was very successful in following both paths. Towards the end of the 19th century Manchester was one of the foremost centres of the cotton trade in which Hewit established a career in which he rose to the top and became a prominent member of important institutions and various committees. Alongside this illustrious career ran an equally successful life as an artist. Considering the above, it is no surprise to find that in this field he also became a prominent figure as an Honorary Vice-President of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. His paintings are extremely rare as the majority of his output was purchased for permanent collections worldwide. He exhibited widely at the Royal Academy from the outset of his career; the Paris Salon; the New English Art Club; the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1940 and extensively at leading venues throughout England. When he retired from commercial life he had the opportunity to increase his output, which allowed him to stage a series of one-man exhibitions at the New Burlington Gallery in 1936; the Grosvenor Gallery in 1937; the Manchester Academy in 1938; the Goupil Gallery in 1939; Salford, his birthplace, in 1943 and Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1948.
