The work of Durieux has been characterized in the last 25 years by the tranquil French landscapes. His enthusiasts enjoy it and stand in the gallery with their nose on top of the drawings and paintings. However, there is a special novelty to report for this exhibition! Peter Durieux signed again in the Netherlands. Anyone who knows the artist knows that his drawings are the source for the paintings he makes. These drawings, made in the landscape, form an important part in the oeuvre of the Groningen artist. The "plein air draftsman" draws a few mornings or afternoons per drawing to the same place. He records how the light shows the landscape. It is important for Durieux that the light is the same as the day before, so the artist always chooses the same times of the day in the same place. The tonal landscapes show a silence and an unparalleled intimacy.
The drawings are the basis for his paintings. The artist makes the paintings in his studio in Groningen. Usually small, in this case Durieux thought it was a work that had to be made large. In the work of 100 x 200 cm you keep wandering around and the composition ensures that it is exciting and tranquil at the same time in all places.
