About the Item

Twenty-first century Classical Portraiture has a casual feel as seen here in "Portrait of Benjamin" by Peter Lupkin. The very masculine Benjamin, with his heavy beard, dark tousled hair and open collared shirt, is softened by his melancholic gaze and the delicate fleur-de-lis wallpaper backdrop. As with all great portraiture, the spirit of the individual captured in paint transcends the canvas, creating a dialogue between viewer and artwork. The loose, heavy brush strokes and thickly applied impasto surface add an ease to the formality of portraiture. This piece is framed in an ornate 19th c. gilt Florentine Italian Frame, echoing the fleur-de-lis motif in the painting, measuring 28.5h x 24.5w x 2 inches. The language I use to convey this philosophy in my pieces is one of traditional symbolism, this being indoctrinated into my personality through an apprenticeship into a traditional stained glass studio at the age of 14 and continuing to the present day. I seek to create scenes and narratives that are at the same time realistic and fantastical. I often use pre-existing stories when I am developing an image. I will then take these narratives and expose a less studied side of them, or try to bring them into a contemporary context. Ultimately my goal is to use modern imagery in conjunction with traditional techniques and connect them with contemporary society, showing both the narrative’s and the method’s continued relevance.
