Pierre Coquet
Abstract Composition - original painting by Pierre Coquet

About the Item

"A vibrant tapestry of color and texture, celebrating pure abstraction with a dynamic, tactile rhythm." Pierre Coquet (1926–2021) Abstract Composition Oil on board, 44 x 64 x 2 cm (17.3 x 25.2 x 0.8 in) Framed in a natural oak floating frame: 49 x 69 x 3.5 cm (19.3 x 27.2 x 1.4 in) This striking abstract painting by Pierre Coquet features a dense field of small rectangular and diamond-shaped forms, layered in rich, expressive brushstrokes. The palette—dominated by shades of blue, brown, and white—creates a rhythmic interplay of color and form. Thick, visible paint application lends the surface a palpable, tactile quality. Entirely non-objective, the composition emphasizes pure movement and chromatic harmony, evoking a vibrant sense of energy and density. Signed "P. Coquet" at the bottom right, the artwork is elegantly presented in a natural oak floating frame. Influenced by Nicolas de Staël and Lanskoy, Coquet’s lyrical abstraction merges structural dynamism, material richness, and a profound emotional depth. An exceptional addition for collectors seeking textured, authentic mid-century French abstraction. Paris, rue des Solitaires, oil painting by Pierre Coquet Reference number F489 The painting is framed with a natural oak floated frame. 65 x 50 cm (70 x 55 cm frame included) This work is painted with oil on a paper that is laid on a board and placed in a made to measure wood strectcher. It is signed in the low right Paris is one of Pierre most important subjects. Pierre's Paris is always depicted in a grey atmosphere. Buildings are stylized but the city is recognizable with its typical grey galvanised steel and orange terracota chimneys. The composition here is a little atypical, as there is a certain symmetry between the top and bottom of the painting. You could almost turn it upside down, there's a kind of mirror effect. The support for the painting is a cardboard box salvaged from the art school where he taught (Corvisart-Paris). The students used it to protect their tables. Pierre kept them and painted on them, and we can see little drawings or annotations made by students who had fun scribbling on them. Sharing Bon-Bons
By Victor Gabriel Gilbert
Located in Missouri, MO
Early 20th Century Oil Painting by Victor Gilbert. Canvas dimensions 14.75 x 18 inches. Framed dimensions 22 x 25 inches. Born Paris, France 1847; Died 1933 Victor Gilbert's natural ability as an artist was recognized early, but his family lacked the financial resources to send the young man to the École des Beaux-Arts. Rather than enrolling in the École, Gilbert was apprenticed to Eugene Adam as an artisan painter and decorator. His only formal education was evening classes with Pierre Levasseur at the École de la ville de Paris. Perhaps it was his early immersion into la vie quotidienne that formed the basis for his later choices of subject matter for his art, that of the markets and streets of Paris. Despite his lack of formal training, Gilbert's admissions to the Paris Salons of 1873 and 1874 were very well received by audiences and critics alike; at this time he was supported by the dealer Paul Martin, who was an important proponent of the Impressionist movement. Gilbert emerged in the early 1880s as the primary Realist painter to record the French marketplace...
