Original cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, August 26, 1961.
The Post described, “The Post described, “The Cub Scout motto is “Do your best,” and under these soggy circumstances the best idea is to send an SOS to the nearest ship of Sea Explorer scouts. While the boys are awaiting rescue they might try to improve the seaworthiness of the phone booth. Or the Cubmaster could conduct a refresher course in Cub lore, reminding the lads of the symbolism of their uniform: The blue stands for “truth and loyalty and the sky above”; the gold is for “sunlight and cheer and happiness.” Yes, we realize this is an awfully small Cub pack —but artist Dick Sargent simply couldn’t pack any more boys into the booth. Will there be any other questions? Question: What is the difference between a calf and a Cub? Answer: A Cub has sense enough to come in out of the rain.”
(The Saturday Evening Post, August 26, 1961, p. 3)
Richard Sargent
Richard 'Dick' Sargent, one of The Saturday Evening Post’s most prolific illustrators, was a Midwesterner born in Moline, Illinois, on March 26, 1911. His early career in art began just after his graduation from Moline High School when he went to work for a local printing and engraving plant. While there, Sargent attended night classes at the Moline Illinois Art School, the foundation for his future career as an artist. Sargent then studied at the Corcoran School of Art, and in 1951, he completed his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post, “Truth About Santa,” for the December 15 Christmas issue. While Sargent’s popularity grew through the exposure he received with the Post, he also did illustration work for magazines such as Fortune, Woman’s Day, Photoplay, and American Magazine among others. Americans adored Sargent and his art for his ability to show relatable, pregnant scenes with open-ended conclusions that commented on the situational comedy of life. In the late 1960s he retired to the Andalusia region of Spain and died there in 1978.

One of the hallmarks of great art is recognizing the artist's style instantly. This is the case with Richard Erdoes. His highly stylized comic figures are expressive and communicate the story delightfully and joyfully. Even though this work is rendered in flat, minimalistic two colors, the inventive shape relationships and positive and negative areas convey a very high level of artistic skill. The present work was done on assignment for the prestigious Standard Oil ( Exxon's predecessor ) corporation's company magazine, The Lamp. Although not a newstand magazine, The Lamp had the highest editional and artistic content. Work is unsigned and unframed.
