About the Item
Exquisitely precocious portrait of a little flower girl or "Petite Fille de Journal", paper girl in Paris by Roger Etienne (French, 1923-2011). Signed and dated lower left, "Etienne Paris 1969". Presented in a giltwood frame with non-glare glass. Image 21"H x 16"W, Frame 29.5"H x 24"W x 3"D.
Roger Etienne was born in Brugge, Belgium in 1923. He lived in Los Angeles, Hollywood and Paris, France most of his life. Born in Belgium he came to France as a young man and established his art career there. Appeared in the Flight 951 episode of Climax Mystery Theater on TV.
After World War II he came to Hollywood and pursued his career as both an artist and as a movie actor. He worked for several studios and appeared in many movies on film and TV for several decades. He maintained two homes both in Paris and L.A. where he split his time.
“Journey in Search of an Artist” follows the author, Mary Ruggiero, a hardworking business woman who finds herself while pursuing art and, in so doing, befriends the artist himself: Roger Etienne—a charismatic Belgian who performed bit-parts during Hollywood’s Golden Age of cinema and crossed paths with the greats from Clint Eastwood to Marilyn Monroe.
While in Europe, Etienne took part in the French Resistance during World War II and apprenticed under Pablo Picasso in his youth. Wrought with secrets and insecurities stemming from paternal neglect and intimate betrayals, Etienne was pleased to finally find a true friend in the author who helped him come to terms with his mortality while making amends with his wife. The friendship was healing for both the author and her subject who found purpose in their final years.
As its title suggests, “Journey in Search of an Artist” by Dr. Mary Ruggiero emphasizes the importance of going places in life; taking risks to achieve something worthwhile, and overcoming obstacles in pursuit of fulfillment. This book deals with truth; confronting one’s past mistakes rather than hiding behind a facade of contentment. Instead of suppressing pain experienced from infidelity, disease and abuse, this book urges readers to face their hardship head on in order to truly heal and embark upon a journey of their own. About the Author
Psychologist, writer, teacher and real estate professional, Dr. Mary Ruggiero was a single mother who thanked God each and every day for having been blessed with the best parents and the best children in the world. A proud “child of the 1960s,” she loved flowers, animals, art, music, theater and helping others. She lived in Orange County with her two daughters and 10 cats.

Irina Belotelkin Roublon, née Roudakoff, was born in Elisavetgrad, Ukraine to the Russian noblesse ancienne, descendant of Catherine the Great, she was a student at the Mariinsky Noble Ladies' Institute , Novocherkassk, Russia. She was orphaned at the time of the Russian Civil War after her father, General Paul Roudakoff, was fatally wounded in battle; 5 days later her mother died of typhus.
Still unaware of her parents' death, and after witnessing her two sisters' deaths from starvation, the young Irina, then 8 years old, made her way over 1,000 kilometers, alone and through many privations to Moscow and the Estonian embassy there, with whom her Estonian uncle Volodya Blonsky had made arrangements.
After a year in Moscow, and appeals to the Estonian consul, Irina was aided in a dramatic escape from the Soviet Union, to her aunt Anna Blonsky Lassburg (1882–1940) and her husband Doctor Genrick Lassburg in Tallinn, Estonia. Eventually, after in 1929, traveling through Ellis Island and admitted as a student, of voice studies, she joined her brother who had settled, in 1923, in the United States.
Irina came to San Francisco during the Second World War, Among Irina's devotions were ballet and opera. She often entertained friends Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Sergei Leiferkus when they were in town. Natalia Makarova and Yuri Possokhov were often guests at Irina's Russian Christmas and Easter parties.
From the early 1960s through the late 1980s, Irina studied and prolifically created still life and portrait paintings in oil and water color, excelling in flower compositions. She held studio and feature exhibitions; she competed and won prizes. Her work is in holdings throughout the San Francisco Bay area, Europe and Russia.
In 1965 she undertook private study with two prominent Russian painters, including Serge Ivanoff; she executed a portrait of her two masters. She cherished her portrait as executed by Serge Ivanoff.

An early 1900s modern art movement, Cubism focused on exploring relationships between images, perspectives and materials, and opened the door to Abstraction. Cubism began in Paris with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The term 'Cubist' was a derisive description by a critic of a geometric landscape painting done by Braque in 1908. Juan Gris, the originator of Collage, joined Picasso and Braque in 1910. Originating influences on Cubism included geometric-shaped paintings of Paul Cezanne, Post-Impressionisms’ emphasis on flat picture surfaces, and Picasso's fascination with the abstraction he perceived in African tribal masks. Aspects of Cubism were Analytical Cubism and Synthetic Cubism (see Glossary). By 1914, the Cubist movement as an organizing force officially terminated with the beginning of World War I. But its effects remain today. "Almost all later art, figurative and abstract, two and three-dimensional, random or hieratic, was conditioned in some way by these new dimensions of reality." (Phaidon) Other French artists associated with Cubism concepts were Fernand Leger, Marcel Duchamp and Nicholas Delauney. In America, leading Cubist painters...
