About the Item

Bemusing - and chock-full of details - this painting is a perfect centerpiece for a colorful living space, or a cheeky dining room. Blending characters and places from popular culture with the vibrant, vintage colors of his home in Puerto Rico, painter Sam Melendez constructs images that are as personal as they are playful. Utilizing one of his favorite muses - Olive Oyl from the cartoon Popeye - Melendez constructs a whimsical and highly tactile world that brings the character into our world. The playfulness and joy in this work is sure to bring a smile to any space it's in. About Sam Meléndez: Sam Meléndez combines his love for all things vintage and bright colors from his home, Puerto Rico, in his work. Evidence of his process is an integral component of his paintings, creating an authentic personal narrative alongside the subject he depicts. For this reason, the grit that charcoal marks leave behind and the notes he makes while sketching the pieces are important to the final compositions. "I love the combination of the raw, black and white of the charcoal and bare canvas contrasted with the super bright colors I work with."
