Congost" Period: Second half of the 20th century Provenance: Private collection, Barcelona Artistic movement: Catalan Post-Impressionism DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING In this painting, Sebastià Congost i Pla captures an idyllic landscape with figures, where light and color play a fundamental role. The scene depicts a sunlit natural setting, with a vibrant palette of greens, yellows, and blues that enhance the sense of harmony and tranquility. The artist employs a loose and expressive brushstroke, evoking the Post-Impressionist tradition. Three figures rest on the grass, barely defined, allowing the viewer to complete the image with their imagination. The use of shadows and light creates a sense of depth and volume, while the composition balances natural elements with human presence. The painting conveys an atmosphere of peace and leisure, reflecting the influence of the Catalan landscape on Congost’s work. BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST Sebastià Congost i Pla (1919-2009) was a Catalan painter born in Olot, a city with a strong landscape painting tradition. He trained at the Escola Menor de Belles Arts and the Escola Superior de Paisatge in Olot, where he developed a solid pictorial technique focused on nature. Throughout his career, Congost specialized in mountain landscapes, rural scenes, and urban markets, with a style that evolved from realism to a vibrant Post-Impressionism. His color palette and energetic brushstrokes reflect the influence of artists like Van Gogh and the Fauves. His works have been auctioned and collected primarily in Spain. ARTISTIC MOVEMENT Sebastià Congost i Pla is associated with Catalan Post-Impressionism, a movement derived from Impressionism that, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, evolved towards a more expressive and personal language. Catalan Post-Impressionism combined the Impressionist emphasis on light and color with a greater freedom in paint application and a more structured composition. In this context, Congost inherited the tradition of Olot landscape painters and fused it with a bolder palette and a more spontaneous brushstroke, akin to Fauvism. Notable artists related to this movement include: Joaquim Mir (1873-1940): Known for his vibrant colors and Mediterranean light. Josep Amat (1901-1991): An Impressionist painter who evolved towards Post-Impressionism. Hermen Anglada Camarasa (1871-1959): Recognized for his expressive use of color and composition. SIMILAR FRENCH PAINTERS Sebastià Congost i Pla’s style shares similarities with several Post-Impressionist and Fauvist French painters, who also experimented with color and loose brushwork: Claude Monet (1840-1926): A pioneer of Impressionism, his use of light and reflections in nature resembles Congost’s treatment of luminosity. Paul Cézanne (1839-1906): His structural approach to landscape and use of color to define volume influenced many Post-Impressionists, including the Catalan tradition. Henri Matisse (1869-1954): One of the leading figures of Fauvism, his vibrant palette and loose brushstrokes resemble Congost’s expressiveness. Albert Marquet (1875-1947): His work falls between Impressionism and Fauvism, with intense landscapes and fluid brushwork. Émile Othon Friesz (1879-1949): A Fauvist and Post-Impressionist, known for his energetic and free use of color, which resonates with Congost’s work. André Derain (1880-1954): A co-founder of Fauvism, his landscapes with bright colors and simplified forms share commonalities with Congost’s style.
