About the Item

Romantic, Pre-Raphaelite painting titled 'Cinderella', this oil on canvas painting is in the Victorian period after a painting by Sir John Everett Millais noted to be in the collection of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, famed for writing and producing world famous musicals such as 'Cats', 'Les Miserables' and 'Phantom of the Opera'. This charming painting has a bit of theatre in it with beautiful Cinderella looking out from her place by the cinders with her broom and a whimsical peacock feather in her lap. Webber's Cinderella dates to 1881 by Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896), a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in London. The Pre-Raphaelites were a group of artists known for choosing literary subjects in jewel-like colors, with attention to detail, and a penchant toward symbolism. In this painting we see the Pre-Raphaelite characteristics of a recognizable fairy tale literary figure with bold color in her auburn flowing hair, green dress and red cap, holding a peacock feather. The peacock feather foretells Cinderella's story, symbolizing beauty and grace, elegance and wealth, renewal and even royalty. Millais was a precocious artist, exhibiting at age nine and joining the Royal Academy School at age 11, the youngest pupil ever. He painted Cinderella when he was 52, a well established artist and leading Pre-Raphaelite member. Cinderella was painted with help from a 12-13 year old girl who sat as a young model for Millais, Miss Beatrice Buckstone, the lovely daughter of a comedian in the theatre. There is an outline of the bellows hanging on the wall opposite Cinderella, signifying her association with the cinders of the fireplace that she keeps warm. A glow of firelight outlines her dress. She jolds a broom. In this painting we see only a closer view of the girl herself. She is a mirror reflection of the famous Millais painting, facing left rather than facing right. The last photo on this listing is of the Millais painting. Among his many Pre-Raphaelite works are Little Red Riding Hood, Joan of Arc and Shakespeare’s Mariana and Ophelia. This painting has no signature. It is set in a frame and canvas that has the characteristics of the 19th century, so in the period of the famous painting by Millais in 1881. The canvas shows age, prepared by Winsor & Newton Limited, printed on the back. It is possibly a study of Cinderella without the detailed background, bare feet and defined bellows and stool in the Millais painting. Could it be an enlarged study of the girl, without the background detail, that would appear in the final work? In research, it is noted that Millais painted meticulous studies prior to painting his finished work. He paid great attention to detail, sometimes painting different angles in different light before deciding his final work. As a comparable sale, Christie’s sold an early reproduction of Millais’ famed work Ophelia for 10,000 GBP (equivalent $15,000) in 2008. His original works have achieved hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction, indeed two to three million dollars for his finest work. Millais’s work is represented with dozens of paintings in the Tate London Museum, and works in numerous museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert, National Gallery of Art and the Kelvingrove in Glasgow to name a few. Millais moved toward realism in later life, including portraits and landscapes, particularly Scottish landscapes in Perthshire. In his personal life he and his wife Effie (a subject of a portrait herself) had eight children and the need to support them may have influenced his change to more popular and lucrative art forms. This painting is about 27" high and 19" wide. In the frame it is 34" by 27". The frame is wood with gilt. The stretched bar has age consistent with the 19th century, and with a vintage original canvas, unlined. There has been minor retouching visible under UV light. Otherwise it appears to be in very good condition. Provenance is from a private collection in England, imported to the United States by the Gallerie in 2025. Previously offered and SOLD on First Dibs but the buyer did not complete the sale. Now offered with additional research and background. At the very least, this is a charming vintage original hand-painted oil of Millais's Cinderella, Miss Beatrice Buckstone. Enjoy!
