About the Item

This charming vintage painting of an early 19th century boy is identified as Viscount Seaham born 1821, later known as Lord George Vane-Tempest, the 5th Marquis of Londonderry. Painted in the style of Old Masters. young Seaham's portrait is a hand painted oil on canvas, with rich red coloring, white satin trousers, golden top hat, and woodland view in the background. This painting is highly regarded for the striking boyish pose, the finger in his period leather shoe, the vivid red coat and white collar against a darker woodland background. The portrait of the boy's face is finely detailed. Sir Thomas Lawrence was a famous portrait artist in the early 1800s, commissioned to paint the family of the Marquis of Londonderry when Lord Seaham was a boy. One of his known paintings featured the mother of Lord Seaham, the Marchioness, with her son beside her in a red jacket and white trousers. This portrait of Lord Seaham resembles the boy in that Lawrence painting, circa 1828-1832. A portrait very similar to this boy, pose and clothing; was first attributed to Lawrence, but later was attributed to Margaret Carpenter, a renowned early 19th century portrait artist. The painting by Carpenter was part of a collection purchased by an American industrialist with holdings in the Midwest. The collection included work by Sir Thomas Lawrence. Later the painting of this boy was sold from that collection, and this one was purchased from an Ohio estate. A handwritten note on the back suggests the painting is by artist R. Cousins, After Sir Thomas Lawrence. Samuel Cousins was the engraver of work by Lawrence, and was also an artist in his own right. The names of Cousins and Sir Thomas Lawrence are often paired. This painting is an oil painting on canvas, and the canvas has been attached to a wood panel, so that the back of the canvas is not visible. There is no evident signature. While this is a vintage painting the actual age, and the artist, are unknown. The price reflects the lack of a signature, being sold as a vintage/antique Old Masters style painting of a known subject from the 1820s. The canvas inside the decorative frame is 19.5" high and 26.5" wide, and 26.25" by 30.25" with the frame. The painting is in good order with no evident previous restoration or known structural or other issues. Minor imperfections are to be expected for vintage and antique art. The painting was lightly cleaned by Saltire Gallerie, bringing out brighter color and more definition in the background, and is ready to hang and enjoy!
