About the Item

Sunil Das - Untitled - 23 x 16.5 inches (unframed size) Ink & Watercolor on paper Inclusive of shipment in ready to hang form. In the mid sixties again he explored diverse cults of popular ritual for pictorial ingredients of an evocative mystic symbolism. An ink-and-wash of 1965 features a figurative image of ambiguous connotation. The motif looks like a cult image worshipped by people practising primitive religion. A squat but monumental figure, it has for each hand several reptilians snaking down from shoulder to the finger-tips, for legs a pair of beastly fore-paws and its dark oval totemic frame is inlaid with odd shapes and forms, slimy tadpoles, shells and cowries with their toothy undersides. They seem to have been set as the deity's entrails and other internal organs. This drawing is a spin-off from Sunil's paintings of the Tantra and Underwater series of the same decade. Sunil Das ( 1939-2015) was a Master Modern Indian Artist from Bengal . Extremely successful right from his college days , Sunil Das has been extremely well lauded by art critics , the press , artists and the art and culture glitterati across the world . Sunil das was the youngest artist to have won the National Award - The Taj Shiromani Kala Puraskar Recipient of the much coveted Govt. of India's 4th Highest Civilian Award : The Padma Shree (2014) Highly talented Sunil Das has done shows all across the world , got fame as early as while he was still in college , youngest recipient of the Lalit Kala Academy Awards and received a scholarship to study at L’Ecole Nationale Superior des Beaux arts, Paris. " There are painters who transform the Sun to a yellow spot , but there are others who, with the help of their art and intelligence , transform a yellow spot into Sun" - Pablo Picasso . Sunil Das was exactly one such artist. Style : Sunil Das' style of work is very original and shows no specific influence. He had risen to fame like MF Hussain with his famous paintings of horses, to the extent that he was nicknamed 'Ghora Das' ( Hindi which means Horse Das) Like Hussain, Sunil Das was inspired by the force and strength of the moving horse. The horses and the bull ( inspired from his visit to Spain and witnessing the Bull Fighting ) have appeared more than 7000 times in Das’s works. He has otherwise painted haunting pictures of women thereby revealing the dark side of people who are otherwise considered beautiful. His works on the Red Light of Kolkata , was also much lauded and brings about an important social message through his works. Das's main mediums could easily be Oil On Canvas , His Stimulating and Stirring works in Mixed Media , Conte , Charcoal ,Serigraphy , Wood Works , Sculptures . Whatever medium he worked on , he effortlessly mastered. Not one to be stuck to one style , Das experimented and worked on various series and mediums. His works involves the quick use of the brush and pen to create master pieces that have a dynamic effect , potent with power. About the Artist and his work : Sunil Das : (1939 - 2015 ) Calcutta . The Recluse, Watercolor, Acrylic on paper, Brown, Contemporary Artist "In Stock"
By Joydip Sengupta
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Joydip Sengupta - The Recluse - 22 x 17.5 inches (unframed size) Watercolor and Acrylic on paper. Style : His artistic devices are drawn from a range of sources, such as Kalighat paintings and ancient philosophical texts. Of course, his concerns are very much contemporary like the impact of globalization leading to economic marginalization and cultural degradation. His photo realistic works draw from images related to contemporary Indian life, building complex puzzles and weaving together myriad experiences and influences as imbibed by the artist. The motifs in his paintings are rather complex. According to his “I primarily work on Paper and Canvas. My chosen mediums of expression are Watercolour, Gouache, Acrylic and Oil paints. I am also engaged in photography, filmmaking, sculpture and installations.” Conceptually, the immediacy of the drawn image alongside elaboration of the painted surface; balance the overall process of image making with anecdotes and mystery motifs. The interlocking of juxtaposed drawings with the painted surface steadily blurs the certainty of the known from the unknown. An altered sense of reality emerges. The human psyche perceives to the extent of what it may see and beyond that spectrum is the unknown, which is an anxious state of being. The notion of the self within a contained form is bound by the limits of time and to embrace its fleeting nature is a challenge. We are able to justify the presence of reality by assigning identities to it and a strong sense of the self is built around them. From within the illusions of a complex network, we are often reminded that life is fleeting. The surplus and grandeur of modern culture shifts your attention to make-believe realities where the nature of the self is packaged in everlasting youthfulness and happy living. Untitled, Figurative, Ink, Brush, Dry Pastel on Paper Jogen Chowdhury "In Stock"
By Jogen Chowdhury
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Jogen Chowdhury - Untitled, 14 x 11 inches ( Unframed Size ) Ink with Brush & Dry Pastel on Paper, 2014 Style : He has immense contribution in inspiring young artists of India. Jogen Chowdhury had developed his individual style after his return from Paris. Jogen Chowdhury has been widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken line. Like Léger, Chowdhury has been stirred by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of a person. This is done by, distorting the form without breaking the line and in the world of young, contemporary art; distortion has been Jogen Chowdhury’s most significant impact. Perhaps, because of this, a common observation of his work is that his “people” are caricatures. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised - the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms. About the Artist & his works : Born : 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India. Family Background: His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury's father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. 1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board.
