About the Item

This large scale oil painting of a elephant depicted in the remains of a party, with cups, chairs and a disco ball, is an excellent statement piece. At 6ft in width this impressive oil painting exemplifies the artist’s distinctive style and creative vision. A neutral ground aids in the artists' reference to Dutch trompe l'oeil paintings. Thomas Broadbent explores the coexistence of nature and human environments, depicting animals among the everyday relics of human life. His compositions offer poignant and poetic meditations on our evolving relationship with the natural environment. Broadbent’s style balances scientific observation with a contemporary reinterpretation of the symbolism found in 17th-century Dutch still life painting. In his stage-like scenarios, he approaches his subjects with the detailed eye of a naturalist and the insight of a social philosopher. Through meticulous rendering and unexpected juxtapositions, he encourages reflection on the fragility of human dominance and the persistent agency of the natural world. Thomas Broadbent is an American artist whose work bridges fine naturalist detail, conceptual installation, and poetic explorations of the cosmos and the natural world. Born in Miami, Florida, Broadbent is based in Brooklyn, New York. Over the years, Broadbent has built a distinguished career marked by international exhibitions, critical acclaim, and several major honors. Among his accolades are: Pulse Prize (2016, New York) — winning the award for Best Solo Booth at PULSE Art Fair for his “Inertia” series. National Museum of Wildlife Art acquisition—his work is in the museum’s permanent collection. Art in Embassies Purchase Award for his “Lunar Mosaic,” which also hangs at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. His exhibition history is similarly international and robust. Solo shows have taken place across the United States and abroad — including venues like the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Croxhapox Gallery in Ghent (Belgium), Voorkamer Gallery in Lier (Belgium), Inspace Gallery in Beijing (China), and the Newark Arts Council, and New York's Front Room Gallery, who represents his work. Critics and the press have taken notice too: Broadbent’s work has been featured in The New York Times, NY Arts, The New Jersey Star-Ledger, The Brooklyn Rail, among others. What makes Broadbent especially important is the way his art blurs borders — between science and aesthetics, between human civilization and nature, between the microscopic and the celestial. Works like his lunar mosaics (assembled from watercolors referencing NASA-style photomosaics) or his more recent nature‑pieces that juxtapose wildlife with human remnants, ask us to reconsider our relationship to space, scale, and our place in the natural order. Altogether, Thomas Broadbent occupies a compelling place in contemporary art: one as much concerned with technical skill and naturalistic detail as with conceptual depth and ecological imagination.
