Unidentified
"Allegorical Scene with Mythological Figures"

About the Item

Unidentified Artist (19th Century) "Allegorical Scene with Mythological Figures" This enigmatic oil painting on panel, executed in the grisaille technique, presents a compelling allegorical composition with mythological figures. The scene is rendered in monochrome sepia tones, emphasizing form, movement, and dramatic contrast rather than color, a technique often used in preparatory studies or as a homage to classical sculpture. The figures—two seated female deities and a dynamic cherub-like figure—are engaged in an intense interaction, suggesting a mythological or symbolic narrative. Composition & Symbolism The seated female figures, partially draped and holding musical instruments (a lyre and bow), may represent Muses, personifications of the arts, or classical goddesses. The energetic cherub or satyr-like figure, interacting forcefully with the drapery, suggests themes of passion, playfulness, or artistic struggle. The flowing fabrics, expressive poses, and classical composition hint at influences from Baroque or Neoclassical allegorical traditions. The use of grisaille enhances the sculptural effect, making the figures appear almost like reliefs from antiquity. Materials & Condition Medium: Oil on panel Technique: Grisaille (monochrome painting) Framed Dimensions: 29 x 26 cm Panel Dimensions: 17 x 14 cm Frame: Ornate giltwood frame with decorative motifs, original to the period Condition: Well-preserved with minor signs of age, enhancing its antique character Historical Context & Artistic Style Likely 19th-century European School, possibly French, Italian, or German, reflecting Neoclassical and Romantic influences. The use of grisaille suggests it may have been a study for a larger composition or an independent piece inspired by classical sculpture. The piece aligns with works by academic painters and history painters who explored mythological and allegorical subjects. Investment & Collectibility A rare example of a finely executed grisaille panel, making it highly desirable for collectors of classical or academic art. Ideal for Neoclassical and Romantic period interiors, serving as an intellectual and decorative piece. An evocative artwork showcasing the influence of antique themes in 19th-century European painting. This sophisticated and atmospheric allegorical composition, with its rich mythological symbolism and masterful use of chiaroscuro, makes it a valuable acquisition for collectors of classical European art.

"Winter Wonderland"
Located in Edinburgh, GB
Unidentified Artist (19th Century) "Winter Wonderland" (1885) This charming 19th-century oil painting captures a winter landscape, depicting three figures trudging through the snow, engaged in animated conversation. The scene is set against a serene rural backdrop, where bare trees and a distant village silhouette convey the stark beauty of winter. The soft glow of the sky, transitioning from warm hues to cool whites, enhances the tranquil yet brisk atmosphere of a cold winter’s day. Plot & Interpretation The three travelers appear to be peasants or laborers, possibly returning home or embarking on a journey. Their layered winter clothing, fur hats, and backpacks suggest they are seasoned wanderers or workers, braving the elements. The gesturing figure in the middle seems to be engaged in storytelling or giving directions, adding a sense of movement and interaction. The snow-covered ground and delicate shadows create depth, emphasizing the hardship and resilience of rural life in the 19th century. Materials & Condition Medium: Oil on canvas Framed Dimensions: 47 x 46 cm Canvas Dimensions: 24 x 34 cm Frame: Ornate giltwood frame, enhancing the painting’s classical aesthetic Condition: Well-preserved with minor age-related patina, in line with its 1885 dating Historical Context & Artistic Style Likely influenced by Northern European realism, particularly Russian, German, or Scandinavian schools that depicted harsh winters and rural peasant life. Comparable to the works of Adolf von Meckel, Vasily Perov, or Carl...

Rebecca at the Well
Located in New York, NY
Provenance: Dr. James Henry Lancashire, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, by 1925; probably by descent to: Private Collection, Cumberland Foreside, Maine, until 2018 This unpublished panel is a characteristic work of the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend, an anonymous Florentine painter in the circle of Bartolommeo di Giovanni, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Sandro Botticelli. The artistic personality of the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend was independently recognized by Everett Fahy and Federico Zeri at roughly the same moment in time. Fahy originally dubbed this artist the Master of the Ryerson Panels but later adopted Zeri’s name for the artist, which derives from his eponymous works from the Samuel H. Kress collection (Figs. 1-2). Fahy posited that the artist was most likely a pupil of Ghirlandaio active from roughly 1480 to 1510, and that he may be identifiable with one of Ghirlandaio’s documented pupils to whom no works have been securely attributed, such as Niccolò Cieco, Jacopo dell’Indaco, or Baldino Baldinetti. The present painting was first attributed to this master by Everett Fahy in 1989, who became aware of its existence only after publishing his definitive studies on the artist. The surviving body of work by the Master of the Apollo and Daphne Legend is largely composed of series of panels treating the same theme. In addition to the works illustrating the legend of Apollo and Daphne, there are also series on the themes of Susanna and the Elders and the story of Saint Joseph, among others. The subject of the present panel is drawn from Genesis 24, the story of Isaac. It is possible that our painting relates to another work by the artist depicting the Sacrifice of Isaac formerly in the collection of E. A. McGuire in Dublin, Ireland (Fig. 3), and that these two panels were originally part of a decorative scheme based on the story of Isaac. Although the Master’s paintings of this type have traditionally been considered painted fronts of wedding chests, known as cassoni, the scale of these paintings and the fact that they are often part of a series indicates that they are more likely spalliera panels—paintings set into furniture or the wainscoting of a room. The biblical episode depicted in this painting centers on the theme of marriage, which suggests that this work was likely commissioned for the domestic interior of a newly married couple. The Master has transcribed into paint even the minute details of this Old Testament story, in which Abraham sends a servant to travel by camel to the land of his father and seek out a wife for his son Isaac. The servant is here shown at the well...
