Antique German Orientalist Painting of a Cairo Street by Macco

Early 20th Century

About the Item

Antique German Orientalist painting of a Cairo street by Macco German, Early 20th Century Canvas: Height 77cm, width 116cm Frame: Height 108cm, width 147cm, depth 10cm This vibrant Orientalist oil painting is a striking example of the work of Georg Macco (1863-1933), one of Germany’s most versatile and accomplished travelling artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Closely linked with the Düsseldorf School of painting, Macco established a studio in Munich during the late 1880s before embarking on extensive travels across Europe and the Middle East. His journeys took him to Italy, Scandinavia, Jerusalem, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, influencing a diverse body of work that includes landscapes, portraits, architectural studies, and bustling urban scenes from his travels abroad. Macco’s paintings have retained their appeal long after his death, with many pieces held in prominent museum collections throughout Europe. This particular painting depicts a lively street scene in Cairo. In the foreground, figures and animals move between palm trees and stone buildings, while street vendors sell fruits and produce along the roadside. Above them, the dome of a mosque rises prominently, dividing the animated foreground from the distant cityscape in the background. Macco’s characteristic brushwork—composed of short, bold strokes—is especially evident in the textured surface of the mosque’s dome and the detailed clothing of the figures. This technique adds rich texture and enhances the depth and vibrancy of the composition. Set within an ornate giltwood frame, the canvas is signed ‘Georg Macco’ in the lower left corner. Drawing directly from his personal travel experiences, this lively depiction of Cairo offers a captivating focal point for any interior and is sure to appeal to collectors of Orientalist and urban genre paintings.

Group portrait painting after the hunt, oil on canvas
Located in London, GB
This charming painting depicts a group of gentlemen gathered around a kitchen table and admiring an English Setter. The snowy rooftops, just visible from the kitchen window, combined with the lit fire and holly decorating the picture frames in the room, implies that this is a Christmas scene. It also appears that the gentlemen have just returned from a fox hunt, and are now warming themselves, drinking port and smoking long pipes by the fire. Five men — three gathered behind the table and two standing in front — are identically dressed in long black riding boots...

Large Antique Oil Painting by Chierici Entitled ‘The Mask’, 1869
Located in London, GB
Large antique oil painting by Chierici entitled ‘The Mask’, 1869 Italian, 1869 Canvas: Height 72cm, width 96cm Frame: Height 95cm, width 118cm, depth 8cm This large-scale oil painting is by the Italian artist Gaetano Chierici (1838-1920). Considered one of the greatest Italian genre painters of his time, Chierici is known for his charming familial scenes, rendered with an almost photographic level of realism. This painting is a version of one of his most favoured scenes, entitled La Maschera (‘The Mask’). A similar larger version by the artist dated to 1874 was sold at Christie’s, ‘19th Century European Art Sale’, 2013, lot 19 (£133,875). The painting depicts a humorous squabble between siblings, mediated by their mother. The young girl clings to her mother's leg in fear, whilst her brother taunts her with a frightening theatrical mask. The mother’s mouth hangs open, likely about to scold her son for his teasing. An assortment of objects are littered over the room, including shelled pea pods, cutlery, and paper scrapes, adding to the sense of chaos. Chierici effectively captures the tumultuous atmosphere, and the emphasis on the dynamics between the family members is typical of his work. Also to be noted are the exceptional technical qualities of the work. The pictorial realism of the figures and the surrounding kitchen is achieved through the multiple layers of thin paints and glazes, resulting in a lifelike sheen. Chierici’s use of colour is also superb, contrasting the browns and neutrals of the kitchen with pops of colour from the mother’s red headscarf and the teal cabinet...

Diptych, Oil on Linen: 'Némésis'
By David Mellen
Located in New York, NY
David Mellen's work is not easily defined, vacillating between human flesh and metaphoric representation, the paintings beg you to look deeper and to consider their physical properties. Duchamp, de Kooning, Bacon, Giacometti, Rothko are all direct influences for Mellen, yet he can not be strictly categorized as a representational or an abstract artist. Mellen paints forms reminiscent of human bodies, building them one day at a time for the duration of several months. An endless process of addition and subtraction is at work as the loosely defined figures emerge in sharp contrast with precisely executed geometric backgrounds of neutral colors. The juxtaposition between exposed canvas, well-defined geometric background and a form as the subject of the painting is a motif that has followed Mellen’s work through the years. The entities in Mellen’s work reference actions rather than concrete characters. For example, in Descent (2020) a fall from grace...
