Antique scenes of putto and a faun celebrating the fertility and abundance of Bacchus (God of wine and ecstasy) could reinforce the dangers of such excesses. Putti were the spirits of wild abandon and strong, lustful passions. The hard-working putti also tended the vine representing the natural world's spirits and God's love, blood, and sacrifice. Today we still refer to alcohol as "spirits.
