About the Item

Large and beautiful Italian grisaille painting with a mythological theme in Renaissance taste, second half of the 18th century. The painting is unsigned. Painted in oil on canvas, tone-on-tone using the grisaille technique, it depicts a mythological scene with Tritons and Nereids, like those that decorated the rooms of aristocratic palaces in the 16th century furnished as fantastical grottoes. The highly decorative genre was used in both painting and sculpture and we find it, for example, in the beautiful fountains that adorn Piazza Navona in Rome. Good condition, the canvas is unframed because it was not used on these decorative type panels.
