About the Item
Inspired by the quote "Time is a dressmaker specializing in alterations." - Faith Baldwin
In her recent series, "The Painted Word," Vera Barnett has turned to the written word for inspiration, building a body of work from her examination of common sayings, quotes, and poems. Barnett develops imagery with poignant meanings derived from each phrase, and assembles her compositions as maquettes in her studio from which to paint.
Once the scene is created – using sewn plastic and cloth, cardboard, tape, and found objects – Barnett paints her tableaus in a trompe l’oeil manner so real as to confound the viewer. The figures’ fabricated textures are rendered so convincingly, yet their presence and humanity are fully authentic. Frederick Turner writes of Barnett’s subjects, “To begin with, they have been painted with such loving classical attention that their cheap materials and tight or flaccid artificiality take on a kind of pathos, are ennobled by the attention they have been given.”
The juxtaposition of plasticity and reality suggests duality of meaning; Barnett’s interpretations of the written word are uniquely her own. Barnett explains, “I am drawn to art that explores the emotional relationships between people, their environment and circumstances that they find themselves in. I wish to reconstruct these ideas through my own vision, my life and experiences.”
Barnett studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. This painting is included in her second solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery, “Vera Barnett: The Painted Word,” in 2015.

Burning Desire - Sable Mare with Flower & Butterfly Mane & Amber-Rose Background
By Rose Freymuth-Frazier
Located in Chicago, IL
The sable colored mare bows her head to allow the viewer a better view of her intricate mane which is enhanced with red roses. Red-winged black birds flit around her, a symbol of protection, good luck and even prosperity. The amber rose background intensifies the softness of the horse's coat and the overall aesthetic. This painting is unframed, please contact the gallery for framing options.

Rose Freymuth-Frazier Employing the techniques of the past in the service of contemporary exploration, I seek to add a fresh voice to the sometimes venerable, sometimes dusty and archaic tradition of large-scale figurative painting, while subtly addressing the mythology, objectification and subjugation of women. My subjects are at first glance close to home-new mothers, friends, lovers, artists, dancers-but are then quickly placed at a distance via edgy modification, rigorous technique, minimal contexts and composition, and idiosyncratic use of color. I am also interested in social presentation, artifice, and simulation as they relate to my subjects. I hope to peel away a gossamer thin layer of reality, not just to document the real but also to reveal what might be. BIOGRAPHY Given my restless history, it is curious that I became a figurative painter in New York City. My maternal Grandparents fled Hitler's Germany in the late 1930's. After being refused entry to the United States, they were welcomed into the Dominican Republic, where they happily resided in a small orderly bungalow of their own design and made their living as studio photographer and cheese maker...
