About the Item
In this artwork, the central figure is the face of a young woman who looks directly at the viewer with firmness and a defiant attitude, a cigarette in her mouth, projecting an image of self-confidence and indifference toward others' expectations. Her direct and intense gaze is intersected by a bold blue stroke, symbolizing her determination to see beyond societal impositions and remain true to herself.
The tic-tac-toe symbol in the piece represents the idea of play but also alludes to the constant competition and expectations imposed by society, where it often seems like there are predefined rules for winning or losing. However, in this context, the game is merely a structure the girl chooses to step away from in order to forge her own path.
The phrase "Don't let the world tell you who to be" encapsulates the core message of the artwork: rejecting the idea of being defined by others’ expectations and reclaiming the right to self-expression and authenticity. It serves as a reminder that true strength lies in challenging norms and refusing to let the world dictate our identity.
The vibrant colors and energetic brushstrokes reflect a life filled with passion and rebellion, while the backward cap and cigarette suggest a carefree attitude toward social conventions. The piece boldly declares individuality, making it clear that being authentic is an act of courage and resistance in a world that constantly tries to define us.
The blue stroke suggests a barrier or an attempt to obscure her vision, yet by keeping her eyes visible, the artwork conveys the idea that, even when external expectations try to blind us, authenticity and inner perception prevail. This combination of elements highlights the ability to maintain one’s vision despite societal pressures.
The tic-tac-toe element evokes a game governed by rules and structure, yet it also reflects how life often presents us with predetermined paths and expectations. However, the central figure refuses to conform to this "game" and instead chooses authenticity.
At the bottom of the painting, the phrase "I’d rather be rebellious and authentic" stands as a bold statement affirming her choice to live with courage and loyalty to herself, rejecting conformity in favor of personal freedom. This phrase encapsulates the spirit of both the artwork and the exhibition as a whole—authenticity as an act of rebellion against a world that constantly tries to shape us.

From GUCCI in Wonderland series
GUCCI in Wonderland series contains two parts.
First one, GUCCI in wonderland, is an inspiration that came to John Paul Fauves after doing a 10 piece collection of some Alessandro Michele art campaigns.
There was so much magic realism in the GUCCI brand and concept that transcended from being a clothing label to something more surreal. It is here when the artist decides to give a hold to his new collection for 2018 named "holy exit" and dive into this new world of colors and wonders.
The second part, Alice in Wonderland, represents the artist a world of fantasy and dreams. It seems as if the author Lewis Caroll could write like a dream.
The same concept of surrealism is what FAUVES feels about Gucci design and branding. It as if Gucci can design and create form the world of dreams, and this is what the artist wants to represent in his art GUCCI in wonderland.
ABOUT John Paul FAUVES:
John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica . His artistic journey started at a very young age after he became a student of Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso , one of the most important Costa Rican modern art tutors. John Paul spent 15 years studying and mastering his technique, and only a few years ago he finally started showcasing his work.
In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media. Greatly inspired by modernist masters as wellas pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Of his experimental and high eclectic style, he says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is somethinglimitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.”
