About the Item

"Àgbájo Owó L’Afií S’òya (Togetherness Brings About Progress)" is a striking artwork created by the Nigerian artist Wale Ajayi. This piece embodies the rich cultural heritage and the spirit of unity that is deeply rooted in African societies. The Yoruba title, "Àgbájo Owó L’Afií S’òya," can be translated to mean "Togetherness Brings About Progress," and it is a reflection of the artist's belief in the power of collective effort. The artwork is an oil color creation that beautifully combines traditional and contemporary elements. It features a vibrant color palette, with a central focus on hands and arms symbolizing unity and cooperation. The hands come together in a dynamic and harmonious fashion, suggesting the idea that when people work together, they can achieve progress and prosperity. Wale Ajayi's work often explores community, culture, and social harmony themes. "Àgbájo Owó L’Afií S’òya" serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of togetherness in achieving common goals and bringing about positive change. It is a celebration of the African spirit of unity, and it conveys a message that transcends cultural boundaries, emphasizing the universal significance of collective effort in achieving progress in our interconnected world. He teaches Painting and Drawing at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria. He does not only engage in teaching and research activities; he is also a studio practicing artist who has participated in over 30 group art exhibitions and 4 solo shows at local and international levels. He has also executed several commissioned art projects within and outside the country. His conceptual narratives focus on man’s response to his inner being – the unconscious, subconscious, and conscious states (based on theories of Sigmund Freud, 1856 - 1939). The painting series recounts; that what life gives to man is neither limited to what nature makes available to him nor what is obtainable by him. Often, man does not have total control over what accrues to him. Some unseen forces prevail to make things happen either positively or negatively.
