About the Item
From the Michael Hall Collection, this is a great American scene showing the excitement of the fair. It depicts a time when men wore coats and ties and women had hats at the fair because it was such a big event. You can see the snake charmer, animal handler, and side show barker entertaining the crowd. This is one of Zolton Sepeshy's best paintings and is an important work in his catalog.
The painting is presented in an original artist frame.
Born in Kassa, Hungary, Zoltan Sepeshy later became a resident artist of Birmingham, Michigan. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Budapest as well as in Vienna and Paris. He was appointed as an art instructor at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts and later at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
His first solo exhibition took place in New York, at Newhouse Galleries, in 1932. Sepeshy showed 20 paintings and eight graphics, including depictions of urban America, genre, and European subjects, all done in a modernist manner seemingly derived from Cézanne and the Cubists.
He was a major painter of the American Scene and depicted the small towns and harbors around Lake Michigan. A further gauge of his importance is that during his lifetime, museums ranging from national institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago to university galleries such as the Sheldon Art Museum at the University of Nebraska acquired his work for their permanent collections.

The 1970s were the “glory days,” Huffaker says, for himself and a stable of talented illustrators whose work routinely found itself on the covers of the nation’s premier newsmagazines and in the pages of The New York Times. For the better part of that decade, Huffaker was among an elite breed of commercial artists—his hero and fellow Southerner Jack Davis, the legendary Mad Magazine illustrator, among them—working during a remarkable period when art directors routinely turned to illustration to give comic relief to the country’s deeply serious and dark problems. From civil rights and the women’s movement to Vietnam and Watergate, the gas crisis and inflation to the rise of Jimmy Carter, Huffaker mined a deep well of material ripe for his brand of visual wit and caustic satire. He sent his portfolio to children's book illustrator Maurice Sendak, the legendary “Where The Wild Things Are” illustrator to gauge his prospects, and when Sendak replied, “C’mon up, you’ll do all right,”
