About the Item
The lotus is a sacred flower in many religious traditions and refers to spiritual awakening and purity of heart. This meditative symbol is a metaphor for rebirth and a life unfolding. The lotus has been an on-going subject for the artist and has a chapter in her book, Symbols of the Spirit: A Meditative Journey Through Art.

Born: 1953, Mississippi, USA Glen Rogers is an internationally exhibited painter, printmaker, and public sculptor with an MFA in printmaking. She lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 25 years where she was very active as an artist as well as serving on the board of the SJ ICA and co-founded Citadel Print Center. She moved to Mexico in 2002 and currently lives in San Miguel de Allende. Solo exhibitions include: Museo de la Mujer, Mexico City; Casa Europa, San Miguel de Allende; Casa Haas, Mazatlán; Bellas Artes, Cusco, Peru; and Bienal Int'l de Grabado, ICPNA San Miguel, Lima, Peru. Glen has been visiting ancient sacred sites around the world for her inspiration for more than 35 years as well as worked in studios around the world. To this end, she has done artist residencies in Morocco; Venice, Italy; Spain and Belgium. Her book, Art & Sacred Sites: Connecting with Spirit of Place, chronicles her pilgrimages to sites around the world. Her public artworks in California, include Beacon in Campbell; Web of Life, bridge railing for City of Chico; Spirit Gate in San Jose and internationally Throne for a Goddess, Kunstpark St. Ruprecht/Raab, Austria; and Aleteo, El Charco Botanical Garden, San Miguel de Allende. Her publications, Symbols of the Spirit: A Meditative Journey Through Art, and oracle decks, Spirit Cards and Sacred Feminine Wisdom are available through her website: www.glenrogersart.com. Gold & Despair is my adaptation of Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece "The Woman In Gold", also known as The Mona Lisa of Austria. Having admired the symbolic art of Klimt since my working days as a fine art restorer at Vienna’s prestigious Conservation Institute (Bundesdenkmalamt) in the 1980’s, I conceived the idea to recreate the jewel of his gilded period with an interpretive lens on the looming darkness of the Holocaust and World War II.
As a native of Austria, Salzburg, I have developed an appreciation for Klimt’s art, and Art Nouveau in general. For the last thirty years, I have lived in New York City and worked as a fine art restorer, conservator, and painter as well as in the healing arts.
Klimt had executed The Woman in Gold in the span of four years (1903-1907). My own creative process during 2014-2017, reflects my diligent care and thoroughness in rendering the original painting. In 2014, I started with the preparation of the canvas using Klimt’s original size of 54 x 54 inches (167 x 167 cm). For gesso, I used the traditional method of rabbit skin glue and chalk. For the painting, I used oil paints and genuine 23.5 karat gold in various shades, as well as silver leaves, to magnify the brilliant sheen of Klimt’s gold...
