About the Item
CREEPING AND CLIMBING by Heather Hartman was created for her exhibit, "Kudzu Season." This painting is a rendering of Kudzu vines on a blue atmospheric background. Multiple "sun spots" have been painted in by Hartman to give the painting an ethereal quality. A halo of light arches over the top half of the painting, circling a bright center of light spots, which creates a receding tunnel illusion. Kudzu vines with burgeoning leaves creep from the lower left-hand corner of the canvas to the right-hand center. Hues of peach and yellow can be found within the sunlight renderings.
The kudzu plant is both a visual and conceptual touchpoint, signifying the historical complexity and seasonal cycles of the American South. Originally introduced to provide shade in the home garden, Kudzu was later promoted as a cure for farmland ravaged by tobacco and cotton monoculture. Its invasive nature was not truly understood until it was too late. The roots grew deeper. The wounded land, bandaged in a green blanket, did not heal.
Yet kudzu persists. An undeniable part of the Southern landscape, it has been used as food, as medicine, a way to build homes, and a means of creating sustainable fuel. The question of Kudzu is still incomplete. Understanding its visual presence in Hartman’s surroundings offered a new way to grapple with other incomplete questions of ecology and mutability.

By Heather Hartman
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
WATER AND LIGHT (THE THIEF) by Heather Hartman, made for her show "Kudzu Season," is one of a series of four paintings representing the four seasons relative to the Kudzu growth cycle. "Water and Light" is the spring-inspired painting of this seasonal series. During the spring, the kudzu plant begins to awaken from its winter dormancy. The predominantly light blue/sage green atmosphere of this painting gives way to the vibrant curve of a rainbow on the right-hand side of the painting. The leaves of a tree in the background give us the sense that plant life is beginning to flourish. The silhouette of a bare kudzu vine...
