About the Item
Descriptive text: Cellophane wrapped orchids caught the eye of artist Carole Garland, and she chose to paint the peekaboo flowers in this abstracted oil painting. This is a new subject for the artist, who has painted landscapes, cityscapes and figures. She discovers a new kind of beauty in the delicate but bold colored petals of the orchids, which multiply as they appear and disappear. An oil painting on a wood panel, the pine wood sides can serve as a frame.
Carole Garland has served on the Board of Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains & Seashore for over 20 years,
on the board of TAG Gallery and was a member of the Associate Artists Committee of the California Art Club. She is in numerous art collections throughout the United States and has shown in venues across Southern California.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

A friend of Carole Garland’s suggested she might be so enthusiastic about painting figures and groups of people because of her previous isolation during Covid. In fact, her one wish when it was over was to sit at a sidewalk café anywhere and people watch. But in this work, there is something more.
“Thoughts and Prayers” is a reaction to attending a Bingo fundraiser for a Recovery House. Everyone was enjoying themselves at various tables. It was a benign event, except for the specter of mass shootings in innocent, unsuspecting gatherings like this. In the painting, Garland attempts to convey her feelings of dread at an otherwise boisterous occasion. It was happening everywhere, anywhere, all the time.
