A fine and unusual 19th century oil on canvas depicting an intimate domestic scene. At the centre, a gentleman in formal attire faces a lady in a blue dress, the composition suggestive of a marriage proposal. To one side, another woman is seated at a table, while in the adjoining room a man writes at his desk, lending further depth to the narrative of middle-class life. This is a charming work of social American history, certain to appeal to collectors of genre painting. Well presented in a vintage gilt effect frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
